Veteran Employment Success Stories

Every month the Office of Veteran Employment Services (OVES) will be sharing stories of individuals that have successfully found careers through our services. Disabled Veterans Outreach Program Representative (DVOP) provide the intensive services necessary to meet the employment needs of Veterans who are economically or educationally disadvantaged, disabled, homeless, or facing other significant barriers to employment. April 2021

• A low-income veteran received assistance from the Office of Veteran Employment Service. The veteran was provided individualized career services including resume development, mock interviewing and job leads. The veteran was hired full time in the IT field working with Operating Systems with an annual salary of $75,000 per year.
• A service-connected disabled veteran received Office of Veteran Employment Services assistance with job leads, resume development, mock interviewing techniques and direct job referrals. Veteran was hired as a Custodian with a state college. This is a full-time position with full benefits. Starting pay is 17.50 an hour.
• A low-income service-connected disabled veteran worked with a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist (DVOP) seeking a career change. The veteran completed informational interviews with an automotive apprenticeship program and the Local Veteran Employment Representatives (LVER) and was provided interviews and direct job leads and resume development. After working with The Office of Veteran Employment Services staff (OVES) the veteran accepted a position as a Firefighter. This is a full-time position with benefits and a starting salary of $64,000 per year with overtime.
• A low-income and service-connected disabled veteran worked with A Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist (DVOP) seeking employment as an Accountant which would allow them to make best use of their accounting degree. The DVOP and veteran completed resume development and job development assistance from the Local Veteran Employment Representative (LVER). The veteran was subsequently hired as an Accounting Manager. The veteran will earn $44,000 per year and have full benefits.
• A low-income, service-connected disabled veteran had been contemplating where best to re-enter the workplace after being laid-off permanently due to COVID-19. After a long job search, at the asking of the veteran, the Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist (DVOP) facilitated phone conversations and secured employment. The veteran has decided to retire and will receive $2,100.00 per month full-SSI Benefits plus VA service-connected pension.
• A service-connected disabled veteran worked with a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist (DVOP) after being permanently laid off due to COVID-19. The DVOP provided specific labor market information to their targeted industry. The veteran and DVOP completed resume development and targeted job referrals for position's suitable to the veteran's level of education and career work experience. The veteran was subsequently hired as a full-time Tax Office Regional Manager. The veteran will earn now earn $52,000 per year and have full benefits.
• An at risk of being homeless veteran received assistance from the Office of Veteran Employment Services staff. The veteran received individualized career services including resume development, housing assistance and referrals, transportation information, job searching, and job leads. The veteran was hired and relocated as a Senior Manager with federal agency earning $98,000.00 annually beginning April 5, 2021.
• A low-income veteran was provided resume assistance and coaching on the interview process from the Office of Veteran Employment Services. Veteran overcame at risk for homelessness and accepted a job offer as Security worker earning $39,500.00 annually beginning April 12, 2021.
• A homeless veteran was provided services by the Office of Veteran Employment Services. The veteran was provided resume development, comprehensive assessment and Individual Employment Plan with job referrals. The veteran was hired as a Machine Operator and assembles components appliances, coils and switches with a salary of $37,440.00.
• A service-connected disabled veteran was provided services by the Office of Veteran Employment Services. The veteran received guidance on resume writing and interviewing. The veteran applied for a position as a cook and was offered $26,880.00 annually. The veteran started 5 April 2021.
• A service-connected disabled veteran received services from the Office of Veteran Employment Services. The veteran was provided guidance on resume writing, interviewing and training on sourcing employment opportunities. The veteran was hired as a test Engineer with a salary of $50,000.00 per year.
• A service-connected disabled veteran who was homeless and unemployed worked with a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist that assisted the veteran with job applications and interviewing skills. The veteran was offered a Vaccine Manager position earning $35,360.00 annually.
• A service-connected disabled veteran worked with the Office of Veteran Employment Services. The veteran received assistance in the development of their resume. The Disabled Veteran Outreach Specialist also provided guidance on interviewing. The veteran interviewed and was offered a position earning $49,000.00 annually. The veteran started the position on 5 April 2021.
• A veteran recently released from incarceration received assistance Office of Veteran Employment Services with resume and job development. The veteran secured a position as a Chemical Operator paying $19.00 hourly.
• A service-connected disabled veteran who completed the VA Chapter 31 Veteran Readiness and Employment program received Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist assistance with resume development, career guidance and labor market information. The veteran secured a position as a Crew Lead earning $26.29 per hour.
• A veteran at risk of being homeless was provided employment support from the Office of Veteran Employment Services that included comprehensive assessment, an individual employment plan, and resume writing techniques. The veteran was offered a position as a Custodian earning $30,000.00 annually.
• A homeless veteran was provided career services by the Office of Veteran Employment Services including resume development, comprehensive assessments, and an Individual Employment Plan with job referrals. The veteran was hired as Machine Operator earning $37,000.00 annually.
• A veteran at risk of being homeless was provided resume assistance and coaching on the interview process from the Office of Veteran Employment Services. The veteran was offered a position as a Facility Maintenance Specialist with an annual salary of $39,000.00.
• A low-income service-connected veteran worked with a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist (DVOP) who coordinated with the Department of Safety and Professional Services, which led to the veteran receiving the needed state credentialling in their field; in addition to, completing resume development and an individualized employment plan. The veteran ultimately accepted a position as a full-time Lead Behavioral Health Counselor, starting pay is $35.00 per hour, and has full benefits after 90 days.
• A service-connected disabled veteran who completed the VA Chapter 31 Veteran Readiness and Employment program received an offer as a Business Office Manager. The veteran was provided services through a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist (DVOP) including resume development and targeting, job search assistance and job development. The veteran desired a part-time position and this role will be 25 hours per week. The starting wage is $21.00 per hour with a sign-on bonus and paid time off after 90 days.
• A formerly incarcerated veteran worked with the Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist (DVOP) to create an Individualized Assessment, an Individual Employment Plan, and updated resume. The DVOP also provided job referrals to assist the job search, co-enrolled the veteran with the HVRP program and a LVER performed job development with employers. The veteran was hired as a Construction Equipment Operator with a starting wage of $28.00 per hour and union benefits.
• A service-connected disabled veteran received assistance from the Office of Veteran Employment Services. The veteran was provided a number of individualized career services including resume development, mock interviewing and job leads. The veteran was hired full time as a Production Worker earning $17.00 per hour.
