Veteran Employment Success Stories

Every month the Office of Veteran Employment Services (OVES) will be sharing stories of individuals that have successfully found careers through our services. Disabled Veterans Outreach Program Representative (DVOP) provide the intensive services necessary to meet the employment needs of Veterans who are economically or educationally disadvantaged, disabled, homeless, or facing other significant barriers to employment. November 2020

  • A homeless veteran was provided career services by the Office of Veteran Employment Services team. The veteran learned to revise a resume, received suggestions and assistance with job leads and referrals and secured a Consultant position with a business solutions company earning $35,000.00 annually.
  • A homeless veteran was provided service from the Office of Veteran Employment Services where they received guidance on resume development and interviewing. The veteran accepted an offer as a Monitor with an annual salary of $30,000.00.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran was provided services from the Office of Veteran Employment Services who provided the veteran guidance on interviewing and job sourcing. This veteran also received several job referrals and eventually interviewed and accepted an offer of $51,000.00 annually as an Environmental Water Technician.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran who learned to develop a resume and improve their interviewing skills, while working with a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist, found employment as a Testing Department Supervisor earning $52,000.00 annually.
  • A service-connected veteran worked with a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist to develop a resume and job searching methods. The veteran applied for several positions and accepted an offer as a Service Manager with a starting salary of $70,000.00 per year plus benefits.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran was hired as an Electronic Controls Technician with a starting pay of $26.00 an hour. The veteran received Disabled Veteran Outreach Specialist assistance with resume development, interviewing techniques, and connection to job leads and VA referral.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran was provided services by the Office of Veteran Employment Services. The veteran was provided guidance on resume development, and a comprehensive assessment and an Individual Employment Plan with job referrals. The veteran accepted an offer as a project engineer with an annual salary of $58,000.00.
  • A low-income veteran who learned to develop a resume and improve their interviewing skills, while working with a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist, found employment as a Forklift Operator earning $32,000.00 annually.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran worked with the staff from the Office of Veteran Employment Services and received resume development and job referrals. The veteran accepted an offer as a Parts Assembler earning $17.00 per hour.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran who was case managed by an Office of Veteran Employment Services team member received career guidance, job referrals, and employment search assistance. The veteran applied for and was offered a position as a Customer Service Representative earning $20.00 per hour.
  • After receiving a full complement of career services from the Office of Veteran Employment Services; a service-connected disabled veteran was hired as a Marketing Specialist with an annual salary of $44,000.00.
  • A homeless and low-income veteran completed resume development with the Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist. The veteran was hired as a full time Dispatch Operator and will earn $2,000.00 per month.
  • A Service-Connected Disabled Veteran was hired as an Office Assistant/Assistant Paralegal with starting pay at $18.00 per hour. The veteran received Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist assistance with resume review and updating, job leads, and state of Wisconsin Non-Compete Appointment registration, and Local Veteran Employment Representative provided job leads.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran connected with staff from the Office of Veteran Employment Services and received job development and job referrals relating to work experience. The veteran was offered and accepted a Director of Support Services position starting at $55,000.00.
  • A low-income veteran was provided resume assistance and coaching on the interview process from the Office of Veteran Employment Services. The veteran received a job offer as a General Laborer earning $40,400.00 per year.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran received career planning assistance from the Office of Veteran Employment Services. The veteran applied to several positions and accepted a position as a Professional Mentor for Family Youth earning an annual salary of $40,560.00.
  • An at risk of homelessness veteran was provided career planning and housing services by the Office of Veteran Employment Services. This veteran was provided guidance on resume development, interviewing techniques, and job sourcing. The veteran received numerous job leads and referrals. The veteran accepted a position as a Call Center Manager with a salary of $55,000.00 annually.
  • A homeless veteran was working with the Office of Veteran Employment Services and received individualized career services including resume development, interviewing skills, and job search techniques. The veteran used those skills to gain employment as a Cashier with an annual salary of $30,000.00.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran was provided career planning services and resume development by a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist which led to the veteran securing a position as a Medical Equipment Transporter with a starting annual salary of $38,500.00.
  • A recently released from incarceration veteran who was homeless completed resume development, career planning, and numerous services to support the veteran's path to employment with a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist and Local Veteran Employment Representative. The veteran received several offers and accepted a full time Chef-in-Training position. The veteran will earn $16.50 per hour + tips with medical benefits and a Thrift Savings Plan retirement.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran completed resume development and many other individualized career services with the Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist. The veteran was hired as a full time Production Technician and will earn $15.30 per hour with full benefits.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran was hired as an Inside Sales Representative for a large medical science company with a starting wage of $52,000.00 a year plus commission bonus. The veteran received Disabled Veteran Outreach Specialist assistance with resume updating, mock interviews, job leads, and direct referral to employers from a Local Veteran Employment Representative.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran who was homeless was hired as a Store Associate for a large home repair store. This is a part-time position with starting pay at $13.00 per hour. The veteran also filed for and started receiving SSDI. The veteran received Disabled Veteran Outreach Specialist assistance with housing, outside agency referral, resume development, job leads, and job development through Local Veteran Employment Representative.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran who completed the Veteran in Piping program was provided services through the Office of Veteran Employment Services. The veteran received guidance on resume development, interviewing, and sourcing employment opportunities. The veteran accepted an offer as a Sprinkler Fitter earning $94,456.00 annually.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran who learned to develop a resume and improve their interviewing skills, while working with a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist, found employment as an Administrative & Mailroom Clerk earning $37,500.00 annually.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran received assistance from Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist staff with resume development and interviewing techniques. The veteran began full time employment as a Jewelry Associate earning an annual salary of $42,000.00 plus commission.
  • A veteran who was at risk of losing their home after having to leave their last employer due to medical issues not compatible with the job, worked with the Office of Veteran Employment Services staff to assist in finding employment though career planning. The veterans used the skills learned to secure a position as a Postal Worker earning $24.38 per hour plus benefits.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran with a terminally ill spouse was seeking employment to pay various bills. The veteran tried working at several places and has now found long term employment where they are content as co-workers and supervisors are supportive and friendly. The starting wage is $11.83 per hour with a three percent raise after 90 days.
  • A previously incarcerated veteran was hired as an Outside Sales Representative with a salary of $45,000.00 annually including bonus and commission for a large insurance company. The veteran received numerous Disabled Veteran Outreach Specialist services including resume development, job leads, veteran justice information, CVSO referral and direct job development from the Local Veteran Employment Representative.
