Veteran Employment Success Stories

Every month the Office of Veteran Employment Services (OVES) will be sharing stories of individuals that have successfully found careers through our services. Disabled Veterans Outreach Program Representative (DVOP) provide the intensive services necessary to meet the employment needs of Veterans who are economically or educationally disadvantaged, disabled, homeless, or facing other significant barriers to employment. March 2018

  • A service-connected disabled veteran received resume development and job and employer referrals from the Office of Veteran Employment Services. Services emphasized the veteran's prior work experience helping the employer to focus on tangible qualifications resulting in a Housekeeper position starting at $30,160.00 per year.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran connected with the Office of Veteran Employment Services for employment search assistance. Through these services, the veteran was offered and accepted a Certified Peer Specialist position starting at $17.00 per hour based on prior work experience and training. Services provided include an initial assessment; career guidance; job referrals; case management; and job search and placement assistance.
  • A veteran experiencing homelessness reached out to the Office of Veteran Employment Services for assistance. Staff provided resume development; case management support; online job search assistance; and job referrals. The veteran was offered and accepted a Wisconsin State Government position starting at $13.65 per hour.
  • A veteran who had been long-term unemployed and at risk of homelessness connected with the Office of Veteran Employment Services who then co-case managed the veteran with partner agencies. Partner agencies include the Center for Veteran Issues and the Homeless Veteran Rehabilitation Program. The veteran was aided with housing as well as employment services including resume and interview skills development and job referral assistance. The veteran was offered and accepted a Rubber Injection Molding Specialist position based on previous work experience and starting at $30,000.00 per year.
  • A veteran who had experienced homelessness was offered and accepted a Welder position starting at $34,000.00 per year based on previous work experience that was emphasized during resume development services provided by the Office of Veteran Employment Services.
  • A low-income veteran who was currently a truck driver but not getting home every night connected with the Office of Veteran Employment Services for assistance in looking for more suitable driving positions. Staff assisted with basic computer skills, and resume and interview skills development. These services helped the veteran get offered and accept a Truck Driver position starting at $23.00 per hour.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran reached out to the Office of Veteran Employment Services and received case management support including resume development and job referral assistance. The veteran was offered and accepted a Security Supervisor position based on previous work and military experience and starting at $32,000.00 per year.
  • A low-income veteran at risk of homelessness was offered and accepted a Cook position starting at $30,000.00 per year based on previous work and education experience. The veteran received resume development; assistance with interviews; and job referral assistance by connecting with the Office of Veteran Employment Services and the Center for Veteran Issues.
  • A low-income veteran connected with the Office of Veteran Employment Services and received resume and job development and job referral assistance. The veteran was offered a Painter position starting at $14.00 per hour based on previous work experience and skills highlighted through the resume development process
  • A veteran experiencing homelessness connected with the Office of Veteran Employment Services and received resume development; labor market information; and job and employer referral assistance. While emphasizing prior work experience, training, and education, the veteran received and accepted an offer of employment for a Consultant position starting at $57,000.00 per year.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran was offered and accepted an Assistant Vice President position starting at $60,000.00 per year with a disabled veteran owned small business working with federal contacting. Utilizing a case management support structure that included resume development; job and employer referrals; and employment counseling, the veteran was able to effectively represent prior work experience and transferrable skills to earn this offer of employment.
  • A low-income veteran received resume and job development and job referral assistance from the Office of Veteran Employment Services. Services received and the veteran's effective representation of skills and experience resulted in the offering and acceptance of a Groundskeeper position starting at $14.00 per hour.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran completed a Department of Veterans Affairs funded education program and connected with the Office of Veteran Employment Services. Staff provided an initial assessment; career guidance; job referrals; case management support; and job search and placement assistance. The veteran was offered and accepted a Business Development and Strategic Engagement Officer position based on previous work and education experience starting at $71,000.00 per year.
  • A service-connected disabled and low-income veteran with two tours to Afghanistan and Iraq who is married with two young children connected with the Office of Veteran Employment Services (OVES). The veteran, looking to return to the workplace after completion of their 2nd Associate Degree Computer Aided Design (CAD) Engineering, reenrolled into a technical college to leverage a potential internship in Advanced Manufacturing Technologies. The staff and veteran completed an application and received Wisconsin Veterans Retraining Grant funding to mitigate the cost of books. The veteran had been working semi-full time for $10.50 an hour with no benefits since 2005. Staff and the veteran completed a customer specific occupational labor market information session and resume development with the goal of entering an internship in advanced manufacturing. Staff generated an OVES endorsing statement for submission with the Northeast Wisconsin (N.E.W.) Manufacturers Alliances' Hire-A-Hero Veteran Hiring Initiative that includes over 270 employers. The veteran received eight interviews and was subsequently hired as a Manufacturing Technologies Engineer starting at $62,000.00 per year. The veteran will be provided managerial training until graduation at which time will be moved onto the company's managerial team.
  • A service-connected veteran who is a single parent connected with the Office of Veteran Employment Services and received resume and interview skills development in collaboration with a Department of Veterans Affairs funded education program. The veteran is completing an Associate's Degree in Environmental Engineering with an emphasis in Water and Waste Water Technology. The veteran was offered and accepted a Utility Plant Operator position starting at $40,144.00 per year.
  • A low-income veteran who was at risk of homelessness connected with the Office of Veteran Employment Services and received case management support. The veteran is a caretaker of a parent and is working to gain child custody. Staff referred the veteran to partner agencies for housing, food, and family support. After working through resume development and being provided several job referrals, the veteran was offered and accepted a Housekeeper position starting at $13.99 per hour based on previous work experience.
  • A veteran was offered and accepted a Maintenance Technician position starting at $40,000.00 per year based on previous work experience. The Office of Veteran Employment Services staff provided resume development and job referral assistance.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran connected with the Office of Veteran Employment Services regarding career progression. After receiving assistance from staff that included a case management support system and career guidance; an initial assessment; job referrals; and job search and placement assistance, the veteran was offered and accepted a Heavy Equipment Mechanic position starting at $24.50 per hour which is $4.75 per hour more than the veteran's previous position.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran connected with the Office of Veteran Employment Services for employment search support. After receiving assistance from staff that included case management support and resume development, the veteran was offered and accepted a Biomedical Technician position starting at $25.00 per hour based on prior work and education experience.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran received a comprehensive and specialized assessment; resume and cover letter development; and online job search assistance from the Office of Veteran Employment Services. The veteran had specific needs that included a Monday through Friday 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM schedule with no mandatory over-time as the veteran is a single parent. After receiving these services and highlighting prior work experience, the veteran received and accepted an offer for employment as a Railroad Track Maintenance worker starting at $22.50 per hour.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran connected with the Office of Veteran Employment Services and received resume and interview skills development and job referral assistance focusing on prior work experience. The veteran was offered and accepted a Veteran Service Representative position starting at $43,000.00 per year.
