Veteran Employment Success Stories

Every month the Office of Veteran Employment Services (OVES) will be sharing stories of individuals that have successfully found careers through our services. Disabled Veterans Outreach Program Representative (DVOP) provide the intensive services necessary to meet the employment needs of Veterans who are economically or educationally disadvantaged, disabled, homeless, or facing other significant barriers to employment. June 2020

  • A homeless veteran was working with the Office of Veteran Employment Services and received career services including resume development, interviewing skills, and job search techniques. The veteran used those skills to gain employment as a Production Lead worker earning $49,000.00 annually.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran was hired as a contract employee with an area consulting firm. The veteran currently receives a base rate of pay at $60 per hour. The veteran received job search assistance, resume development, and job development from the Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist.
  • A homeless and low-income veteran met with a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist and completed an employment plan, resume development, and job development with the Local Veteran Employment Representative. After being referred to a company, the veteran was hired and will earn $17.00 an hour plus a $2000.00 sign on bonus as a Forklift Operator.
  • A Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist assisted a low income/homeless veteran with a comprehensive assessment, career guidance, and referrals to CVSO and other veteran service agencies. The veteran applied for and obtained income from Social Security and veterans' pension. They decided to subsist on those incomes and is very happy with the outcome and services provided by Office of veteran Employment Services staff.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran who was case managed by an Office of Veteran Employment Services team member received career guidance, job referrals, resume assistance, and employment search assistance. The veteran applied for and accepted a Construction Project Manager position with a base salary of $110,000.00.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran received assistance with resume development, job leads, and job development from a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program specialist. The veteran secured a position as a Design Engineer at $65,000.00 per year.
  • A homeless veteran worked with the Office of Veteran Employment Services staff and received career services including resume development, interviewing skills, and job search techniques. The veteran used those skills to gain employment as a Machinist earning $32,000.00 annually.
  • A veteran between 18 and 24 years old worked with a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist to develop a resume and search for job opportunities. The veteran applied for several positions and accepted an offer as a Fire Safety Technician with a starting salary of $35,400.00 per year.
  • A homeless, low-income, and service-connected disabled veteran received assistance from a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist that provided resume development and job placement assistance after losing their job due to COVID-19. The Local Veterans Employment Representative job development resulted in the veteran being hired as a Production Packaging and Logistics Technician earning $15.55 per hour with profit-sharing and educational benefits.
  • A homeless and low-income veteran was provided services by a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist. The veteran completed an individual employment plan, resume development, interview preparation, and job development through the Local Veteran Employment Representative, which resulted in a position as a work-at-home Insurance Sales Agent starting at $22.66 hourly plus commission with world-wide insurance company.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran who was at risk of homelessness was hired as a Production Assembler with a starting wage of $19.00 per hour. The veteran received individualized career services from a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist and Local Veteran Employment Representative to include interview preparation, resume and job development, job search assistance, housing information, and referrals to both the VA, and WDVA for the HUD/VASH voucher program.
  • A previously incarcerated veteran who was at risk of homelessness was hired as a Maintenance Technician for a housing complex with their pay starting at $21.00 per hour. The veteran received individualized career services from a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist and Local Veteran Employment Representative including a mock interview, resume development, skill matching, job search assistance, housing information, and referrals to Community Action Center for connection to affordable housing listings and possible rental assistance.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran who completed the VA Vocational Rehabilitation/Chapter 31 Program was hired by the State National Guard as a federal civilian employee to work on Network Infrastructure of communication equipment. The veteran will be a GS-12 position with a pay of $79,000.00 a year plus benefits. The veteran received Disabled Veterans Outreach Program Specialist services as part of the Chapter 31 program including job leads and development, non-compete registration, and resume development.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran received assistance with resume development, job leads, and job search assistance. The veteran secured a position as a CDL Driver at $500 per week in training and $800 per week + $0.35 per mile upon completion of training.
  • A veteran at-risk of being homeless developed a working relationship with the Office of Veteran Employment Services (OVES) staff. The veteran received case management services and was provided job referral and guidance. Using the skills provided by OVES staff, the veteran applied to and accepted employment as a Case Manager earning $41,000.00 per year.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran received career planning services from the Office of Veteran Employment Services leading to the veteran accepting a position as a Repair Technician with a starting wage of $31,200.00 per year.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran was hired as a Security Officer at a pay rate of $17.00 per hour. The veteran received job search website information, job search referrals, resume assistance, job fair notifications, and Veterans Non-Competitive Appointment information from the Disabled Veterans Outreach Program (DVOP) Representative.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran who completed the VA Vocational Rehabilitation/Chapter 31 Program was hired by a VA Hospital as a Program Specialist. This position is a GS-7 position with a starting salary of $43,000.00 a year. The veteran received job development, job search counseling, SF-15 assistance, resume development, and interview help from the Disabled Veterans Outreach Program Specialist.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran received assistance with resume development, job development, and job leads. The veteran secured a position as a CDL Driver earning $14.00 per hour.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran, who was homeless received employment guidance and a wealth of individualized career services from the Office of Veteran Employment Services staff, gained a professional position as a Laser Welder with a starting rate of $19.00 per hour.
  • A Vietnam era veteran received employment guidance from the Office of Veteran Employment Services who provided several staff-assisted and career services that enabled the veteran to secure a position as a Maintenance and Upkeep Technician earning $14 per hour.
  • A low-income veteran was provided career planning services and job referrals by the Office of Veteran Employment Services that led to the veteran securing a professional position as a Federal Project Manager with a starting annual salary of $110,000.00.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran received individualized career services from Office of Veteran Employment Services staff that included resume writing, interview skills, and referrals to employers. The veteran accepted Federal Employment with the Social Security Administration at wage-grade GS-07, earning $43,251 annually.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran received unemployment benefits assistance, resume development, interview assistance, and job development directly from the Office of Veteran Employment Services team that led the veteran to gain employment as a Courier driving and delivering specimens from laboratories. The starting pay is $16.50 per hour with full-benefits.
  • A service-connected disabled and previously incarcerated veteran received employment guidance from the Office of Veteran Employment Services staff that assisted the veteran in gaining a position as a Dispatcher earning $16.50 per hour.
