Veteran Employment Success Stories

Every month the Office of Veteran Employment Services (OVES) will be sharing stories of individuals that have successfully found careers through our services. Disabled Veterans Outreach Program Representative (DVOP) provide the intensive services necessary to meet the employment needs of Veterans who are economically or educationally disadvantaged, disabled, homeless, or facing other significant barriers to employment. August 2018

  • A service-connected disabled veteran connected with the Office of Veteran Employment Services seeking assistance with gaining state government employment. Staff assisted with resume development and job and employer referrals relating to the veteran's prior work experience. The veteran was offered and accepted a Procurement Officer position starting at $26.00 an hour.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran has earned a Post-Master’s Certificate in Applied Project Management; a Master of Science in Organizational Leadership; and a Bachelor of Business Administration. The veteran connected with the Office of Veteran Employment Services with the desire to enter career exploration with a goal to leave the residential construction workforce due to worsening disabilities. The veteran completed an individual employment plan and was entered into case management. The veteran and staff together completed resume development; enrolled into the state's non-competitive portal for state government jobs; and completed mock-interviews in preparation for an upcoming interview. The veteran was subsequently hired by the by a state agency as an Employment and Training Specialist starting at $19.22 per hour.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran completed a Department of Veterans Affairs funded education program and with the assistance of the Office of Veteran Employment Services was offered and accepted a Sonographer position starting at $31.15 per hour. Staff provided case management support that included resume development and job referrals relating to experience and education.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran was offered and accepted an Information Technology Specialist position starting at $14.00 per hour. Office of Veteran Employment Services staff provided resume development to emphasize prior experience and job referrals relevant to that experience.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran was offered and accepted an Operating Engineer position starting at $29.00 per hour. Office of Veteran Employment Services staff provided resume development to emphasize prior experience and job referrals relevant to that experience.
  • A low-income veteran was offered and accepted a Local Truck Driver position starting at $18.00 per hour. Office of Veteran Employment Services staff provided resume and job development to emphasize prior experience and job referrals relevant to that experience.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran completed a Department of Veterans Affairs funded education program and was offered and accepted a Maintenance Technician-Senior position starting at $27.50 per hour. Office of Veteran Employment Services staff provided resume development to emphasize prior experience and job referrals relevant to that experience; staff also provided career guidance after completing assessments and job search and placement support.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran was offered and accepted and Environmental Services position at a local hospital. Office of Veteran Employment Services staff provided resume development and job and employer referrals leading to an offer of employment at $14.50 per hour.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran received resume development and job referrals to highlight and were relevant to prior work and education experience by staff of the Office of Veteran Employment Services. The veteran was offered and accepted a Freelance Content Strategist position starting at $26.50 per hour.
  • A low-income veteran received resume and interview skills development and job referrals to highlight and were relevant to prior work and education experience by staff of the Office of Veteran Employment Services. The veteran was offered and accepted a Software engineer position starting at $35.00 per hour.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran received an initial assessment; resume and interview skills development; job referrals; and job search and placement assistance that highlighted and were relevant to prior work and education experience by staff of the Office of Veteran Employment Services. The veteran was offered and accepted an Energy Advisor position starting at $58,000.00 per year.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran experiencing homelessness received resume development and job referrals to highlight and were relevant to prior work and education experience by staff of the Office of Veteran Employment Services. The veteran was offered and accepted a Veteran Recruiter position starting at $17.00 per hour and will be moving into new housing soon.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran received resume and interview skills development and job referrals directly related to work experience the veteran gained through prior employment, education, and training. By complimenting the veteran's prior experiences with services provided by the Office of Veteran Employment Services staff, the veteran was offered and accepted a Product Support Technical Trainer position starting at $62,500.00 per year.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran who completed a Department of Veterans Affairs funded education program connected with the Office of Veteran Employment Services and was offered and accepted a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program specialist position starting at $18.95 per hour. Staff provided an initial assessment; career guidance; case management; resume development; job referrals; and job search and placement assistance.
  • A veteran who had been incarcerated received case management; resume development; and a comprehensive assessment from the Office of Veteran Employment Services staff. Assistance with explaining and overcoming a legal past was provided and helped the veteran gain confidence and comfort in explaining a legal history. The veteran was offered and accepted a Staff Accountant position starting at $18.00 per hour.
  • A low-income veteran at risk of homelessness connected with the Office of Veteran Employment Services. The Veteran had a 14-day eviction notice; was 2-months behind on the electric bill; and had no phone minutes to make or receive phone calls. The veteran recently went through a divorce and was now ready to reenter the workplace as CDL and/or Heavy Equipment Operating Engineer; previous licensing and certifications expired in 2011. The veteran was enrolled in case management and worked with staff to develop an individual employment plan. The veteran was referred to partner and support agencies for assistance. The veteran received assistance with rent and electric fees from Heat-for-Heroes; food, gas, and phone cards from the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) organization; and education funding assistance from the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA). Additionally, the veteran received a $3,000.00 re-training grant from the Department of Veterans Affairs. The veteran received resume development and job referrals from staff relating to prior experience and current certifications and licensing resulting in the veteran being offered and accepting a Commercial Driver and Operating Engineer position starting at $25.00 per hour.
  • A low-income veteran received resume and interview development and job referrals relating to prior work and education the veteran acquired in the information technology and software fields. Office of Veteran Employment Services provided services that helped the veteran more effectively accurately represent knowledge and skills resulting in the offer and acceptance of a Software Engineer position starting at $35.00 per hour.
  • A low-income veteran who worked to overcome homelessness was offered and accepted a Local Delivery Driver position starting at $38,000.00 per year based on prior experience. Office of Veteran Employment Services staff provided resume and interview skills development and job referrals related to the veteran's knowledge, skills, and experience.
  • A veteran who had experienced homelessness received resume and interview skills development and job referrals from the Office of Veteran Employment Services highlighting and related to prior work experience. The veteran was offered and accepted a Maintenance Crew Member position starting at $30,000,00 per year.
  • A veteran transitioning from active military service connected with the Office of Veteran Employment Services. The veteran received resume development and job referrals related to the veteran's experience and other intensive services from staff. Staff introduced the veteran and provided a targeted resume to an employer's military/veteran recruitment team. After several interviews an offer for employment was made and accepted for an Information Technology Project Manager position starting at $115,000.00 per year.
  • A low-income veteran at risk of homelessness and parent of a special-needs child connected with the Office of Veteran Employment Services. Having prior work experience in warehouse and logistics, staff provided resume development and job and employer referrals relating to this experience. The veteran expressed the need for insurance coverage and wages of at least $15.00 per hour. Realizing the discouragement displayed by the veteran, staff promptly reached out to the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) organization for gas, food, and phone cards to help until employment was obtained. Through services received, the veteran was offered and accepted a Warehouse Technician/Order Filler position starting at $15.00 per hour and benefits including insurance coverage.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran connected with the Office of Veteran Employment Services and received intensive services that included an initial assessment; career guidance; job referrals; resume development; and job search and placement assistance. The veteran was offered and accepted a Diesel Mechanic position due to prior work and military experience. The position starts at $25.00 per hour; an increase of $5.00 per hour from the veteran's previous position.
