Veteran Employment Success Stories

Every month the Office of Veteran Employment Services (OVES) will be sharing stories of individuals that have successfully found careers through our services. Disabled Veterans Outreach Program Representative (DVOP) provide the intensive services necessary to meet the employment needs of Veterans who are economically or educationally disadvantaged, disabled, homeless, or facing other significant barriers to employment. April 2018

  • A service-connected disabled veteran connected with the Office of Veteran Employment Services to assistance with resume development and job referrals. After emphasizing previous work experience and highlighting tangible skills relatable to current employment opportunities, the veteran was offered a Truck Driver position starting at $60,000.00 per year.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran connected with the Office of Veteran Employment Services for employment search assistance. Staff provided an initial assessment; case management support; career guidance; resume development; job referral assistance; and job search and placement services. These services helped the veteran highlight previous employment and education experience as well as more effectively represent knowledge and skills during interviews. Services provided helped the veteran be offered and accept an employment offer as a Diesel Technician starting at $25.00 per hour.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran was offered and accepted an Employment and Training Specialist position starting at $18.40 per hour based on previous work experience including customer service experience. The veteran connected with the Office of Veteran Employment Services and received resume and job development services highlighting knowledge, skills, and experience, and job referral support.
  • A low-income veteran who relocated from Alaska to Wisconsin brought fifteen years' experience as a Chef. The veteran connected with the Office of Veteran Employment Services. The veteran received case management support that included resume and interview skills development and job referrals. The veteran was offered and accepted a Production Chef position starting at $40,000.00 per year.
  • A service-connected disabled and low-income veteran who had been long-term unemployed connected with the Office of Veteran Employment Services and received resume development emphasizing prior work experience and certifications. Staff also provided job referrals that matched the veteran's experience and recommendations targeted to effectively and accurately representing one's self during an interview. The veteran was offered and accepted a Forklift Operator position starting at $13.00 per hour.
  • A disheartened veteran who is also service-connected disabled lost employment due to organizational restructure reached out to the Office of Veteran Employment Services and received job referrals; online job search guidance; and resume and interview skills development. The veteran's previous position was as a Grant Writer and the veteran was offered and accepted a Grant Writer Assistant position starting at $20.00 per hour.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran who had completed a Department of Veterans Affairs funded education program connected with the Office of Veteran Employment Services and received an initial assessment; career guidance; job referral assistance; resume development; case management support; and job search and placement services. The veteran was subsequently offered and accepted a Police Officer position starting at $37,000.00 per year which is a considerable increase from previous income levels.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran was offered and accepted a Water Technologies position starting at $17.50 per hour which is a $4.00 per hour increase from previous employment. The veteran initially connected with the Office of Veteran Employment Services for job search assistance. Staff provided resume development targeting the resume to the employer's needs helping to lead to this offer of employment.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran working to complete an education program funded by the Department of Veterans Affairs connected with the Office of Veteran Employment Services and received case management support that included resume development and job referral assistance. Staff helped the veteran emphasize prior work and education experience. The veteran possessed an extensive work history in the customer service field. The veteran was offered and accepted a Claims Assistant position starting at $40,000.00 per year.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran at risk of homelessness connected with the Office of Veteran Employment Services and received case management support that included resume development and job referral assistance. The veteran was laid off after a series of furloughs that lasted 12 weeks. The veteran had also earned an Associate's Degree in Engineering Graphics and Design Technology and targeted a position in Commercial Large Ships Design. After receiving services from staff, the veteran was offered and accepted a Mechanical Designer IV position starting at $42.00 per hour.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran connected with the Office of Veteran Employment Services and received case management support that included resume development highlighting prior work history and certifications; an initial assessment; and a comprehensive and specialized assessment to focus more on the individual needs, barriers, and skills of the veteran. The veteran was offered and accepted a Degreed Tester position starting at $24.00 per hour.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran connected with the Office of Veteran Employment Services and received case management support that included an initial assessment; career guidance; job referrals; resume development that helped to emphasize the veteran's prior work and training experience; and job search and placement assistance. The veteran was subsequently offered and had accepted a Veterans Mentor Coordinator position starting at $15.00 per hour.
  • A low-income veteran was offered and accepted a Driver position starting at $17.00 per hour. The veteran connected with the Office of Veteran Employment Services looking for job search assistance locating driver opportunities in valet or van. The veteran received resume development; job referrals; referrals to job fairs and hiring events; and job search and placement assistance.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran was offered and accepted a Traveling Machinist position starting at $20.00 per hour. The veteran connected with the Office of Veteran Employment Services and received case management support that included an initial assessment; resume development; job referrals; and job search assistance.
  • A veteran needing more income connected with the Office of Veteran Employment Services and received case management support that included an initial assessment; career guidance; job referral assistance; job search and placement guidance; and resume development highlighting the veteran's previous work experience, certifications, and skills. The veteran was subsequently offered a Construction Laborer position starting at $18.00 per hour.
  • A veteran who overcame homelessness connected with the Office of Veteran Employment Services and received resume development and job referral assistance. The veteran was offered an Assembler position starting at $14.00 per hour based on prior work experience.
  • A low-income veteran who recently relocated to Wisconsin from California needed assistance with finding employment. The veteran connected with the Office of Veteran Employment Services and received resume development and job and employer referral assistance. The veteran emphasized previous employment and education experience in the information technology field and was offered an Information Technology Technician position starting at $20.00 per hour.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran connected with the Office of Veteran Employment Services and received case management support that included a comprehensive assessment; job referral and job search and placement assistance; and resume development highlighting previous work experience. The veteran was offered and accepted an Assistant Teacher position starting at $31,200.00 per year.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran connected with the Office of Veteran Employment Services for assistance with gaining employment with State of Wisconsin government jobs. The veteran was aided with the non-competitive eligibility process; resume development highlighting previous work experience; job search and application assistance; and employer referrals. The veteran was offered and accepted an Information Systems Development Services Professional position starting at $28.50 per hour.
