Veteran Employment Success Stories

Every month the Office of Veteran Employment Services (OVES) will be sharing stories of individuals that have successfully found careers through our services. Disabled Veterans Outreach Program Representative (DVOP) provide the intensive services necessary to meet the employment needs of Veterans who are economically or educationally disadvantaged, disabled, homeless, or facing other significant barriers to employment. March 2020

• A veteran recently overcame homelessness through efforts of Center for Veterans Issues and OVES. The veterans resume was redeveloped and began applying immediately for security positions accepting a position in the entertainment industry earning $32,000.00 annually.
• An at-risk of homelessness veteran updated their resume and received assistance from Center for Veterans Issues and OVES enhancing their efforts for employment. They have been hired as a bus driver making $30,000.00 annually.
• A veteran overcame homelessness through collaboration of Center for Veterans Issues and OVES. The veteran possessed carpentry skills but desired lighter duties. Their resume was updated, and the veteran was hired as a Lumber Technician earning $27,000.00 per year.
• While working with a Disabled Outreach Program Specialist, a service-connected disabled veteran learned to develop a resume and improve their interviewing skills. They have found employment as a Hydraulic Technician earning $41,600.00 annually.
• A service-connected disabled veteran was laid off after their company closed. The veteran received resume, interview, and job search assistance from the Office of Veteran Employment Services staff and was hired as a web designer. The veteran will have a probationary hourly wage of $10.00 per hour plus unlimited overtime. After probation, the veteran will receive a pay increase to $15.00 per hour plus unlimited overtime.
• A low-income veteran worked with the Office of Veteran Employment Services staff who provided the veteran with full complement of career planning services. They have since started as a 1099 Consultant, with a starting salary of $100 per hour.
• A service-connected disabled, homeless, and low-income veteran who worked with the staff from the Office of Veteran Employment Services and received resume development and job referrals has secured employment as a cook making $12 per hour.
• A veteran that was homeless and low income started working with a DVOP who assisted with resume development and job search skills. This help lead to placement in the CNC/ Manufacturing area earning $28.25 per hour and attained a $2,500 signing bonus.
• A young service-connected disabled, and transitioning veteran was assisted by a DVOP within 24 hours of active duty discharge (ETS). The veteran is now employed as Sheriff Deputy earning $20.31 per hour.
• A service-connected disabled veteran received assistance with job leads, job development, and resume development has secured a position as a Housekeeping Aide with a starting wage of $17.00 per hour.
• Veteran overcame homelessness and unemployment through collaborative efforts of CVI and OVES. The veteran completed a welding training program, learned to write a resume, and improved interviewing skills. The veteran has accepted an offer as Welder earning $36,000 annually.
• A service-connected veteran was assisted by Office of Veteran employment services staff with job development, job leads, and advice on companies and interviewing. The veteran has gained employment as a Senior Organizational Development Manager making $125,000.00 plus 20% bonus and 401K.
• A service-connected disabled veteran who received help with resume and job development and job search assistance has been hired, pending a drug screen. The veteran will be working in Production starting at $11.00 per hour with a 90-day probationary period before they earn benefits.
• A previously incarcerated, low-income veteran was assisted in obtaining employment as an Upholstery Assembler making $14.40 per hour. Veteran was assisted with veteran benefits referral and resume and job search. The veteran was very pleased with services provided by OVES staff.
• Assisted a prior incarcerated, service connect disabled veteran in obtaining employment as a construction framer for $20 per hour. The veteran was assisted with resume development, job search, and employment referrals.
• A 10% service-connected disabled veteran accepted an offer of employment with Horner Plumbing. The veteran received services through a DVOP to include trades information, work smart enrollment, and connection to VIP coordinator. Veteran was also provided information on the WI GI Bill and a point of contact.
• A DOLVET certified Significant Barriers to Employment (SBE), service-connected disabled veteran accepted a position as a Financial Representative. The veteran's starting wage is $21.16 per hour ($44,012.80 per year) plus benefits. The Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Representative assisted the SBE Veteran with resume information, job search websites, job referrals, and with schedules of upcoming job fairs and hiring events.
• A Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist assisted a homeless veteran with resume development and employment readiness services. The veteran recently accepted an offer for full-time employment as a Forklift Operator with a starting salary of $14.10 per hour.
• A Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist assisted a Chapter 31 veteran from the VR&E program with employment readiness services. The veteran recently accepted an offer as a Security Guard with a starting salary of $13.07 per hour.
• A veteran between 18 and 24 was assisted by Office of Veteran Employment Services staff with job referral/placement assistance, job development, and resume assistance. As a result, the veteran obtained employment as a Painter earning $14.00 per hour.
• A Chapter 31 veteran that was assisted by Office of Veteran Employment Services staff recently accepted a position as Scrum Master earning $50,000.00 annually.
• A Vietnam Era veteran worked with the staff from the Office of Veteran Employment Services and received resume development, computer assistance, and job referrals. The veteran accepted an offer as a General Inspector earning $13.00 per hour.
• A previously incarcerated veteran was assisted with obtaining employment at a manufacturing company earning $12.00 per hour. The veteran was assisted with resume development, job search, referrals, and employment counseling. The veteran was well pleased with all services provided by Office of Veteran Employment Services staff.
• A recently separated, service-connected disabled veteran who received resume assistance and job leads was recently hired as an Operations Manager earning $77,000 per year.
