Veteran Employment Success Stories

Every month the Office of Veteran Employment Services (OVES) will be sharing stories of individuals that have successfully found careers through our services. Disabled Veterans Outreach Program Representative (DVOP) provide the intensive services necessary to meet the employment needs of Veterans who are economically or educationally disadvantaged, disabled, homeless, or facing other significant barriers to employment. February 2020

  • In collaboration with Veterans Outreach of Wisconsin - Tiny Home Village of Racine, DVOPs assisted a homeless veteran with resume development and employment readiness services. The veteran began working part time for VOW in the food pantry warehouse but has continued to pursue full-time employment and has recently accepted an offer for full time employment as an Area Manager with a starting salary of $74,000 annually.
  • An at-risk of homelessness veteran who received support from both CVI and OVES staff learned to redevelop his resume and applied for helpdesk positions, which resulted in the veteran being hired as an Enumerator earning $22.00 per hour with a federal agency.
  • A veteran overcame homelessness and recovery issues through collaboration of CVI with OVES and has been recently hired as an Enumerator making $22.00 per hour with a federal agency.
  • A veteran overcame homeless through the support and services they received from CVI and OVES. They were assisted with updating their resume and applying for jobs, which resulted in the veteran receiving and accepting a position as an Inventory Specialist with a graphics company, earning $17.50 per hour.
  • A veteran who is skilled in warehouse operations overcame homelessness through efforts of CVI and OVES. The veteran was hired as a Manufacturing Technician with a tool and engineering firm making $17.50 per hour.
  • A Vietnam Era veteran worked with the staff from the Office of Veteran Employment Services and received resume development and job referrals. The veteran has accepted an offer as a Sales Representative earning $35,000.00 per year, plus commissions.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran who learned to develop a resume and improve their interviewing skills, while working with a Disabled Outreach Program Specialist, found employment as a Bartender earning $70,000.00 annually.
  • A Chapter 31 veteran was assisted by the Office of Veteran Employment Services with resume development, job development, and job referrals. These efforts resulted in the veteran obtaining a position with a company making $20.00 per hour.
  • A Vietnam Era veteran worked with the staff from the Office of Veteran Employment Services and received resume development, computer assistance, and job referrals. The veteran accepted an offer as a part-time Shuttle Driver earning $8.00 per hour.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran worked with the staff from the Office of Veteran Employment Services and received resume development, interviewing strategies, and job referrals. The veteran accepted an offer as an Accountant earning $25.00 per hour.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran accepted a position as a machine operator making $15.75 per hour with benefits after 90-day probation period. The veteran received resume help and referrals from OVES staff.
  • A veteran at risk of homelessness was assisted by OVES staff with career counselling, job referrals, and job development. Through these efforts the veteran has obtained employment as a Molding Technician/Set Up Assistant at a pay rate of $18.00 per hour.
  • A 50% service-connected disabled veteran was assisted by OVES staff with job referrals, placement assistance, resume development, and referral to an employer. This collaboration has resulted in the veteran securing employment as a Sales Manager with a base pay of $65,000.00 plus commissions per year. He is projecting to make $80-$90k this year.
  • A recently separated, low income veteran worked with staff from the Office of Veteran Employment Services and received resume development and job referrals. The veteran accepted an offer as a Transportation Manager Trainee earning $49,400.00 per year.
  • While working with a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program specialist, a service-connected disabled veteran who learned to develop a resume and improve their interviewing skills found employment as a Government Contract Estimator earning $90,000.00 annually.
  • A veteran who is 30% service-connected disabled accepted a temporary IT position earning $18.00 per hour, benefits are include. The DVOP will continue to work with the veteran until they accept a permanent position.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran was provided with a comprehensive assessment, IEP, resume skills, interview skills, and job search help. The collaboration between OVES staff and the veteran resulted in the veteran accepting a position as a Logistics Center Manager earning $65,000.00 per year.
  • With the assistance of OVES staff, a service-connected disabled veteran accepted a position as an IT professional with a starting wage of $25.36 per hour.
  • A 30% service-connected disabled veteran was assisted by OVES staff with job referrals and placement assistance. This collaboration has resulted in the veteran securing employment as a Quality Assurance Technician earning $20.00 per hour.
  • A veteran at-risk of homelessness was assisted by OVES staff with referrals to community resources and job development resulting in the veteran accepting a position as a welder making $21.00 per hour.
  • With the assistance of OVES staff an at-risk of homelessness veteran received referrals to federal, state, and community resources to maintain their housing. The job development efforts resulted in the veteran obtaining employment as a CNC Machinist earning $16.00 per hour.
  • A low-income veteran worked with OVES staff to receive resume development and job referrals, resulting in the veteran accepting a position as a Packager earning $41,000.00 per year.
  • An unemployed, low-income veteran received services from OVES staff and was referred to receive financial assistance and to develop interviewing skills. This veteran was trying to relocate to another state and has since found and accepted a position out of state.
  • A homeless veteran, and family of five without transportation, worked with the DVOP and CVSO to get the family housed in a shelter temporarily. The veteran received resume development, job search, and interviewing skills to become job ready. The veteran has accepted a position as an OTR driver earning $.42/mile, which is approximately $45,000-$50,000 per year.
  • With the assistance of OVES staff, a 50% service-connected disabled veteran accepted a position as a Service Technician earning $17.00 per hour.
  • A low-income, homeless veteran was provided with a comprehensive assessment, individual employment plan, resume and interview skills development, and job search help from a DVOP. LVER assisted with outreach to an employer that hired the veteran as a Bus Driver making $14.50 per hour.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran, who completed the Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment program, was referred to OVES for employment assistance. The veteran received federal resume development, job referrals, and career guidance from the DVOP. The veteran has secured a position with the federal government earning $40,603 per year.
  • A veteran, who is a skilled IT Technician and at-risk of homelessness, received assistance from CVI and OVES. They have been hired with a local school district as IT Security Manager making $22.00 per hour.
  • A veteran overcame homelessness through the collaborative efforts of CVI and OVES. The veteran attended job club seminars, learned to write a successful resume, and conducted job searches online. They have been hired as a Facility Maintenance worker earning $18.00 per hour.
  • A chapter 31 veteran was assisted by Office of Veteran Employment Services staff with resume development, job development, and job referrals. These efforts resulted in the veteran obtaining employment making $20.00 per hour.
  • A 40% service-connected disabled, homeless veteran was marketed by a LVER to local companies, received an interview, and was offered a position earning $28,000 per year.
  • DVOP provided ongoing services and referrals to an eligible veteran who is low-income and at-risk of homelessness. As a result, the veteran was able to secure two jobs (one full-time and the other part-time). The veteran will work as sales representative starting at $2,400 monthly plus commission in the primary job and part-time as an insurance agent.
  • A recently separated veteran and single parent was assisted with resume and job development. The veteran informed the DVOP that they accepted a full-time position at a daycare facility earning $8.50 per hour, and their 2-year-old can be enrolled at no charge.
  • Through the efforts of OVES staff a service-connected disabled veteran without a high school diploma has accepted a position as a janitor at a local grocery chain making $9.50 per hour.
