Veteran Employment Success Stories

Every month the Office of Veteran Employment Services (OVES) will be sharing stories of individuals that have successfully found careers through our services. Disabled Veterans Outreach Program Representative (DVOP) provide the intensive services necessary to meet the employment needs of Veterans who are economically or educationally disadvantaged, disabled, homeless, or facing other significant barriers to employment. November 2019

• A homeless veteran worked with the staff from the Center for Veteran Issues and the Office of Veteran Employment Services who assisted with conducting a comprehensive assessment, enhancing a resume and providing career services. The veteran was hired as HVAC Technician earning $49,000.00 annually.
• A recently discharged and service-connected disabled veteran worked with the Office of Veteran Employment Services staff to develop a resume, enroll in VA Chapter 31 Vocational Rehabilitation and attain several IT certifications, which allowed them to gain employment as an IT Support Analyst earning $46,000.00 annually.
• A service-connected disabled veteran worked with a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist to develop a resume and prepare for an interview for an elementary school teacher position. The Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist assisted the veteran with resume development, mock interviewing and application assistance. The veteran received funding from a local service organization for moving and housing expenses and was hired as a History and Math teacher. The veteran will earn $39,600 per year with full benefits.
• A homeless veteran worked with the staff of the Center for Veteran Issues and the Office of Veteran Employment Services who provided numerous housing and employment services and resources. The veteran used those resources to gain employment as a Material Handler earning $33,000.00 annually.
• A service-connected disabled veteran was provided resume and interview support and was skill-matched to an employer by the Office of Veteran Employment Services where the veteran accepted a General Laborer position earning $16.00 per hour.
• A service-connected disabled veteran who was referred to the US Census secured employment earning $15.60 per hour and a possible upgrade to a supervisor position after training.
• A service-connected disabled veteran who was previously incarcerated and participating in the VA Chapter 31 Vocational Rehabilitation Rapid Employment program received employment assistance from a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist. The veteran was provided a comprehensive assessment, career guidance, resume review, and employment search assistance. The veteran secured employment as a CDL Roll-Off Operator, earning $15.00 per hour.
• A Service-Connected Disabled and endangered of homelessness veteran worked with a DVOP who provided a comprehensive assessment, resume and interview enhancement and job leads. The veteran was hired as a Metro Transit Driver for the city. Starting pay is $21.79 per hour.
• A Service-Connected Disabled veteran worked with DVOP staff at the local Job Center. The veteran received resume, interview, LMI and NCA Eligibility information and assistance. The veteran was NCA hired by Wisconsin's Department of Health Services as an intake PA. This position is full-time with benefits. Starting pay is $15.00 per hour.
• A Service-Connected Disabled veteran received DVOP services at the local Job Center and was aided with resume development, interview skills, a comprehensive assessment and employment plan. The veteran was hired full-time as a Prep Cook and Deli Manager for a local store. Starting pay is $14.50 per hour.
• A Service-Connected Disabled veteran worked with DVOP staff and received comprehensive assessment, career guidance, resume development and job leads. The veteran was hired as a Substitute Teacher. Starting pay is $13.75 per hour.
• A Homeless veteran received DVOP services through CVI. The veteran was assisted with resume development and interviewing skills. The veteran was hired as an assembler in a manufacturing company. Starting pay will be $16.00 per hour.
• A Homeless veteran received assistance from OVES staff at CVI. The veteran received resume assistance and was hired as a Security Officer in the entertainment industry. Starting pay is $12.00 per hour.
• A Service-Connected Disabled and recently separated veteran received DVOP services. DVOP provided information and assistance with job leads and educational resources to further education. The DVOP referred the veteran to other WIOA Partners for education benefits. The veteran also accepted a part-time position as a Security Officer. Starting pay is $18.00 per hour.
• A service-connected disabled veteran who learned to develop a resume and improve their interviewing skills, while working with a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist, found employment as a Construction General Laborer earning $49,920.00 annually.
• A service-connected disabled veteran accepted a job through a temporary hiring agency with a starting wage of $48,600.00 annually with the assistance from a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist who conducted a comprehensive assessment, employment plan and provided resume development.
• A service-connected disabled veteran was hired into a permanent, full time position by an employer that the veteran currently held a temporary position with. They received a mock interview and resume development to prepare for the permanent position. The veteran will continue to work as an Executive Staff Assistant earning $42,000.00 annually with benefits.
• A service-connected disabled veteran obtained a position as a Manufacturing Technician earning $41,000.00 per year after assistance with resume and job development and interviewing techniques from the Office of Veteran Employment Services Staff.
• A low-income veteran worked with a local Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist who assisted the veteran in securing employment as a Laborer earning $13.00 per hour. The veteran was provided a comprehensive assessment, career guidance, resume review, and employment search techniques.
• A veteran at risk of homelessness worked with the staff from the Office of Veteran Employment Services and received resume development and participated in mock interviews. The veteran also received instruction on how to market their skills and adapt them to each position. They accepted an offer as a Registered Nurse earning $74,888.00 per year.
• A homeless veteran who participates in the HVRP program received services from Center for Veteran Issues to locate a place to live and assistance from the Office of Veteran Employment Services to develop a resume and how to effectively search for employment. The veteran accepted a job offer as a HVAC Service Provider earning a salary of $52,000.00 per year.
• A homeless veteran who is currently in the HVRP program received assistance in developing a resume and interviewing and job searching from the Office of Veteran Employment Services Center of Veteran Issues staff. They accepted a position as an Inmate Transporter earning $51,000.00 per year.
• A service-connected disabled veteran received assistance from a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist on developing resumes, interviewing and job sourcing after receiving a full comprehensive assessment. The veteran was hired as an Electronics Technician earning $43,000.00 per year.
• A homeless veteran received assistance from the office of Veteran Employment Services staff to redevelop their resume, conduct effective job searches and participate in mock interviews. The veteran secured employment using the skills learning as a Material Handler earning for $37,000.00 per year.
• A veteran facing homelessness was aided by the Office of Veteran Employment Services staff on developing resumes and interviewing. After applying for numerous positions using the techniques learned, the veteran was hired as a Tool Making Technician earning $34,000.00 per year.
• A low-income veteran worked with a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist who provided resume development and job referrals. The veteran gained employment as a Parking Lot Attendant earning $31,200.00 per year.
