Veteran Employment Success Stories

Every month the Office of Veteran Employment Services (OVES) will be sharing stories of individuals that have successfully found careers through our services. Disabled Veterans Outreach Program Representative (DVOP) provide the intensive services necessary to meet the employment needs of Veterans who are economically or educationally disadvantaged, disabled, homeless, or facing other significant barriers to employment. September 2018

  • A service-connected disabled veteran received resume development to highlight prior work experience from the Office of Veteran Employment Services. In addition to resume enhancement services, the veteran received coaching as a supportive effort to assist with interviewing and effectively representing skills, experience, and abilities. The veteran was offered and accepted a Welder position starting at $16.00 per hour.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran connected with the Office of Veteran Employment Services and received case management support that included an initial assessment; career guidance; job referrals relating to the desired career path; resume development to highlight skills and experience; and job search and placement assistance. The veteran was offered and accepted a Traveling Phlebotomist position starting at $18.65 per hour which is $1.65 per hour increase from the veteran's last position.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran received career planning support from the Office of Veteran Employment Services that included resume development and job referrals emphasizing and related to prior work experience. The veteran possesses a class A Driver license. The veteran accepted a Class A Driver position at $1,200.00 per week after training at $75.00 per day.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran connected with the Office of Veteran Employment Services and received resume development in the federal resume format emphasizing prior work experience. The veteran applied for; was offered; and accepted a Transportation Coordinator position starting at $45,219.00 per year.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran met with staff from the Office of Veteran Employment Services and received resume development; soft skills assessments; and job referrals relating to prior work and education experience and the veteran's desired career path. The veteran was offered and accepted a Clinical Research Coordinator position starting at $38.00 per hour.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran met with staff from the Office of Veteran Employment Services and received resume development and job referrals relating to prior work and education experience. The veteran was offered and accepted a Hospice related position starting at $33,164.00 per year.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran met with staff from the Office of Veteran Employment Services and received resume development and job referrals relating to prior work and education experience in the information technology field. The veteran was offered and accepted an Information Technology Support position starting at $35.00 per hour.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran connected with staff from the Office of Veteran Employment Services and received resume development and job referrals relating to prior work experience. The veteran was offered and accepted a Production position starting at $16.00 per hour.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran met with staff from the Office of Veteran Employment Services and received resume development and job referrals relating to prior work and education experience. The veteran was offered and accepted a Route Sales Manager position starting at $22.50 per hour.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran connected with the Office of Veteran Employment Services and received resume development and job referrals relating to prior work experience. The veteran was offered and accepted a Sales position starting at $35,000.00 per year.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran met with staff from the Office of Veteran Employment Services and received resume development and job referrals relating to prior work and education experience. The veteran was offered and accepted a Medical Services Assistant position starting at $22.00 per hour.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran met with staff from the Office of Veteran Employment Services and received resume development and job referrals relating to prior work and education experience. The veteran was offered and accepted an Emergency Department Nurse position starting at $27.00 per hour.
  • A veteran who overcame homelessness connected with the Office of Veteran Employment Services and received resume and interview skills development and job referrals relating to prior work and education experience and the Veterans desired career path. The veteran was offered and accepted a Warehouse Specialist/Picker position starting at $20.43 per hour.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran met with staff from the Office of Veteran Employment Services and received resume development; job referrals relating to prior work and education experience; an initial assessment; career guidance; case management support; and job search and placement assistance. The veteran was offered and accepted a Biological Science Technician position starting at $33,000.00 per year.
  • A transitioning veteran received an initial assessment; career guidance; resume development and job referrals relating to prior work and education experience in theology; case management support; and job search and placement assistance from Office of Veteran Employment Services staff. The veteran was offered and accepted a Chaplin position starting at $48,000.00 per year.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran received resume development and job referrals relating to maintenance skills and experience from Office of Veteran Employment Services staff. The Veteran completed a Department of Veterans Affairs funded education program increasing the veteran's potential. The veteran was offered and accepted a Maintenance Technician position starting at $23.85 per hour.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran received resume development and job referrals relating to manufacturing skills and experience from Office of Veteran Employment Services staff. The veteran completed a Department of Veterans Affairs funded education program increasing the veteran's potential. The veteran was offered and accepted a Manufacturing Support Technician position starting at $3,875.66 per month.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran received resume development and job referrals relating to information systems skills and experience from Office of Veteran Employment Services staff. The veteran completed a Department of Veterans Affairs funded education program increasing the veteran's potential. The veteran was offered and accepted a System Administrator for Local Area Network (LAN), Wide Area Network (WAN), and Internet Systems position starting at $25.00 per hour.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran received resume and interview skills development and job referrals relating to the aviation field as the veteran currently worked but was dissatisfied with the position. After working with Office of Veteran Employment Services staff, the veteran was offered and accepted an Aviation position starting at $29.00 per hour which is a $4.00 per hour increase.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran received resume development and job referrals relating to leadership skills and experience from Office of Veteran Employment Services staff. The veteran was offered and accepted a Frontline Supervisor position starting at $16.04 per hour.
  • A service-connected disabled and long-term unemployed veteran received case management support; resume development; and job referrals relating to customer service skills and experience from Office of Veteran Employment Services staff. The veteran was offered and accepted a Health Information Associate position starting at $15.59 per hour.
  • A veteran who had experienced homelessness overcame that status due to services provided by veteran support agencies. The veteran received resume and interview skills development and assistance writing letters of explanation for questionable backgrounds from Office of Veteran Employment Services staff. The veteran was offered and accepted a Warehouse Forklift Driver position starting at $35,000.00 per year.
  • A veteran who had experienced homelessness received resume development and job referrals relating to driving and delivery skills and experience from Office of Veteran Employment Services staff. The veteran was offered and accepted a Driver position starting at $40,000.00 per year which helped the veteran overcome homelessness.
  • A veteran who had been displaced after fifteen years of social service received resume development and job referrals relating to the veteran's skills and experience from Office of Veteran Employment Services staff. The veteran was offered and accepted a Youth Support Worker position starting at $32,000.00 per year.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran received resume development and job referrals relating to lawncare skills and experience from Office of Veteran Employment Services staff. The veteran was offered and accepted a Landscape Laborer position starting at $30,000.00 per year.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran received resume development and job referrals relating to logistics skills and experience from Office of Veteran Employment Services staff. The veteran was offered and accepted a Warehouse Picker position starting at $20.43 per hour.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran received resume development and job referrals relating to environmental service skills and experience from Office of Veteran Employment Services staff. The veteran completed a Department of Veterans Affairs funded education program increasing the veteran's potential. The veteran was offered and accepted an Environmental Specialist position starting at $18.00 per hour.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran received resume development and job referrals from Office of Veteran Employment Services staff. The veteran completed a Department of Veterans Affairs funded education program increasing the veteran's potential. The veteran was offered and accepted a General Engineering Intern position based on education completed, starting at $37,000.00 per year.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran received resume development and job referrals relating to nursing skills and experience from Office of Veteran Employment Services staff. The veteran completed a Department of Veterans Affairs funded education program increasing the veteran's potential. The veteran was offered and accepted a Registered Nurse position starting at $25.95 per hour.
  • A low-income veteran received resume development and job referrals relating to driving and delivery skills and experience from Office of Veteran Employment Services staff. The veteran was offered and accepted a Driver position starting at $25.00 per hour.
  • A low-income veteran received resume development and job referrals relating to sales skills and experience from Office of Veteran Employment Services staff. The veteran was offered and accepted a sales position starting at $15.49 per hour.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran transitioning from service received career planning support from the Office of Veteran Employment Services that included resume development and job referrals emphasizing and related to prior work experience. The veteran accepted a Buyer position earning $80,000.00 per year.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran and former Work Study program participant with the Office of Veteran Employment Services applied for a position and was offered part-time work. Staff communicated with the employer on the veteran's behalf; the company subsequently offered a full-time position starting at $18.00 per hour.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran received resume development and employer referral services and support from Office of Veteran Employment Services staff. The veteran was most interested in working at a local medical facility in the food service department. By working with staff and performing well as interviews, the veteran was offered and accepted a Food Service Worker position starting at $15.00 per hour.
  • A veteran who had a record of previous incarceration connected with the Office of Veteran Employment Services and received assistance with job referrals and resume development that highlighted prior work experience. Staff assisted the veteran with a letter of explanation detailing the legal record, what has been completed, and how the veteran intends to live life moving forward as a productive member of society. The veteran was offered and accepted a Journeyman Laborer position starting at $30.50 per hour with a local construction company.
