Veteran Employment Success Stories

Every month the Office of Veteran Employment Services (OVES) will be sharing stories of individuals that have successfully found careers through our services. Disabled Veterans Outreach Program Representative (DVOP) provide the intensive services necessary to meet the employment needs of Veterans who are economically or educationally disadvantaged, disabled, homeless, or facing other significant barriers to employment. January 2021

• A service-connected disabled veteran who was case managed by an Office of Veteran Employment Services team member received career guidance; job referrals; resume development; and employment search assistance. The veteran applied for and was offered a position as a Delivery Driver full-time, earning $33,200.00 annually.
• A service-connected disabled veteran received resume development, interviewing techniques, and job searching assistance from the Office of Veteran Employment staff. The veteran was hired as a Safety Compliance Engineer making $89,000.00 per year.
• A service-connected disabled veteran was provided career planning services and resume development by the Office of Veteran Employment Services which led to the veteran securing a professional position as a Civilian Pay Technician with a starting annual salary of $47,355.
• A veteran at risk of homelessness worked with the Office of Veteran Employment Services and received career services including resume development, interviewing skills, and job search techniques. The veteran used those skills to gain employment as Call Center Operations Manager earning $60,000.00 annually.
• A homeless veteran worked with the Office of Veteran Employment Services and learned to revise their resume, received suggestions and assistance with job leads and referrals. The veteran accepted a social services position earning $32,000.00 annually.
• A service-connected disabled veteran worked with the staff from the Office of Veteran Employment Services and received resume development and job referrals services. The veteran accepted an offer as an DVOP earning $41,600.00 per year.
• A service-connected disabled veteran who was participating in the VA Chapter 31 Veterans Readiness and Employment program received assistance with resume development, job searches, and referral to partnering agencies from a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program specialist. The veteran accepted a position as an HVAC Technician starting at $20.00 per hour with benefits.
• The Office of Veteran Employment Services team assisted a service-connected disabled veteran who was participating in the VA Chapter 31 Veterans Readiness and Employment program with resume, cover letter, and job search. The veteran accepted a position as a Field Recruiter at $55,000 a year with benefits. The veteran is happy with all services provided by OVES staff.
• A service-connected disabled veteran received assistance from a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist with resume updating, benefits registration, job leads, and non-compete hiring process. The veteran was hired as a contract Performance Manager for a state of Wisconsin agency. Their starting pay is $63,000 a year with full state benefits.
• The Office of Veteran Employment Services staff assisted a service-connected disabled veteran who was participating in the VA CH 31 Veterans Readiness and Employment program with job search, resume, and interview skills. The veteran has since been awarded 100% service-connected disability and has decided that this income will be enough to support lifestyle.
• A homeless veteran received assistance on how to revise their resume and also received suggestions and assistance with job leads and referrals. The veteran accepted an Ironworker position earning $60,000.00 annually.
• A veteran recently overcame homelessness through the efforts of Center for Veteran Issues and the Office of Veteran Employment Services. The veteran redeveloped their resume and accepted a position as an Environmental Technician earning $33,000.00 annually.
• A low-income and at risk of homelessness veteran received services from Office of Veteran Employment Services with resume development and interviewing techniques. The veteran secured employment as a Material Handler earning $35,687.00 annually.
• A low-income veteran worked with the Office of Veteran Employment Services staff who provided the veteran with a full complement of career planning services, which led to the veteran gaining employment as a Caretaker earning $30.000.00 annually.
• A veteran with a VA claim pending worked with the staff from the Office of Veteran Employment Services and received resume development and job referrals. The veteran accepted an offer as an Operational Specialist Dispatch Repair Services earning $46,800.00 per year.
• A service-connected disabled veteran worked with the staff from the Office of Veteran Employment Services and received resume development and job referrals. The veteran accepted an offer as a Produce Clerk earning $16.45 per hour.
• A service-connected disabled veteran who was homeless due to a lack of suitable alternative housing completed resume development, an individual employment plan from a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program specialist; and job development from a Local Veteran Employment Representative. The veteran also received financial and home furnishings assistance from the Disabled American Veterans and The VETSNET Group respectively. The veteran was hired as a full-time "Manager-In-Training" for Walgreens and will earn $15.30 per hour with full benefits.
• A transitioning servicemember with service-connected disability received individualized career services from a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program special and subsequently gained employment as a Landscape Technician with a wage of $20.00 per hour.
• A recently separated veteran who is between 18 and 24 years old was hired by a large Distribution center as a Warehouse Stocker/Case Selector at an hourly rate of $20.50 per hour. The veteran received services from a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist including job leads, CVSO connection, a mock interview, and resume development.
• A service-connected disabled veteran received career assistance from a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist who provided job leads, resume development, a mock interview, and housing information. The veteran was hired by a large distribution center as a Logistics Technician loading and prioritizing trailers for shipping at a pay rate of $18.20 per hour with a shift premium of 19.00 per hour.
• A service-connected disabled veteran was provided services by the Office of Veteran Employment Services. The veteran was given guidance on resume development, a comprehensive assessment, and an Individual Employment Plan with several job referrals. The veteran accepted an offer as an Electronic Technician with an annual salary of $80,000.00.
• A homeless veteran was taught how to modify their resume, received suggestions along with assistance with job leads and referrals. The veteran accepted a position as a Molder beginning January 11, 2021 earning $30,000.00 annually.
• A service-connected disabled veteran received employment assistance from a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist that included various job leads, resume development, a mock interview, and non-competitive appointment registration for WI state employment positions. The veteran was hired by a large gaming resort earning $24.00 per hour as a Floor Manager due to the assistance received by the Office of Veteran Employment Services staff.
• A service-connected disabled veteran who learned to develop a resume and improve their interviewing skills, while working with a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist, found employment as a Delivery Driver earning $15.00 an hour.
• A low-income, service-connected disabled veteran received employment assistance after losing their job due to COVID-19. The veteran completed resume development, a cover letter, and applied for targeted employment as a Production Supervisor. The veteran was hired as a full-time Production Supervisor, will earn $63,000 per year.
• A service-connected disabled veteran who was recently released from incarceration and homeless, completed resume development and an individual employment plan with the Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist. The veteran is resident at a Veteran Housing and Recovery Program Facility in addition to being enrolled in an alcohol and drug treatment program with a county veteran's treatment court program. The veteran was hired as a full-time Industrial Complex Security Guard and will earn $15.50 per hour.
• A homeless veteran with no income and past incarceration, gained employment as a Janitor at $11.00 an hour after receiving help with developing an employment plan, guidance on how to create a resume, effectively using a computer to apply for positions online.
