Veteran Employment Success Stories

Every month the Office of Veteran Employment Services (OVES) will be sharing stories of individuals that have successfully found careers through our services. Disabled Veterans Outreach Program Representative (DVOP) provide the intensive services necessary to meet the employment needs of Veterans who are economically or educationally disadvantaged, disabled, homeless, or facing other significant barriers to employment. January 2020

  • While collaborating with the Center of Veterans Issues (CVI), the DVOP helped the veteran overcome homelessness. The veteran was assisted in redeveloping his resume and began applying immediately for security positions. They accepted an offer with a protective services employer earning $15.00 per hour.
  • A veteran at risk for homelessness was assisted with updating his resume and received job leads from both CVI and OVES enhancing his efforts for employment. The veteran was hired as a Machine Operator, earning $13.00 per hour.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran who learned to develop a resume and improve their interviewing skills, while working with a Disabled Outreach Program Specialist, found employment as the Director of Culinary Operations earning $35,000.00 annually.
  • A low-income veteran worked with the staff from the Office of Veteran Employment Services and received resume development and job referrals. The veteran accepted an offer as a Sous Chef earning $61,050.00 per year.
  • A Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist provided employment services to a service-connected disabled veteran resulting in the veteran gaining employment as a s Science Laboratory Technician earning $15.00 per hour with expectation of wage increase.
  • A veteran who overcame homelessness through a collaborative effort from the Office of Veteran Employment Services and the Center for Veteran Issues staff was hired as a Software Engineer earning $63,500.00 annually.
  • The Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist provided an unemployed, homeless veteran with assistance in securing housing and employment. The veteran is currently making $11 per hour.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran accepted an offer of employment in the Finance and Billing office of the Department of Veterans Affairs.
  • Intensive case management services were provided to a Chapter 31 veteran with an 80% service-connected disability. Through the efforts of the DVOP and LVER the veteran accepted an offer of employment as a GIS Records Specialist making $40,000.00 per year.
  • An Office of Veteran Employment Services staff member provided a special disabled veteran with job development services, job referrals, resume development and mock/interview coaching. In turn, the veteran obtained a position as an Operations Supervisor with the pay of $48,880.00 per year.
  • An Office of Veteran Employment Services staff member provided an "at risk" homeless veteran by providing referrals to supportive services, job leads, and other resources. As a result, the veteran has obtained employment as a Recruiter making $45,760.00 per year.
  • A Vietnam Era veteran received support in resume development, computer assistance and job referrals. These case management services resulted in the veteran accepting an offer as a Security Guard earning $12.57 per hour.
  • A homeless unemployed veteran was assisted by a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist who was able to help the veteran obtain employment earning $11.00 per hr., secure housing and other resources for food and furnishings.
  • A service-connected, disabled veteran participating in the Chapter 31 / Vocational Rehabilitation program was provided individualized career services by a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist and has accepted employment as an HVAC Service Technician, who will be earning $27.50 per hour.
  • A low-income homeless veteran is now employed and housed. This veteran was provided with an assessment, career guidance, resume assistance and referrals to housing and other resources and secured employment as a Lift Operator, earning $16.88 per hour.
  • A service-connected disabled, Chapter 31/Vocational Rehabilitation program veteran accepted an offer of employment earning $40,000.00 per year. This success can be attributed to the case management services provided by the Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist.
  • While working with a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist, a service-connected, disabled veteran learned to develop a resume, improved their interviewing skills and found employment as a Machine Operator earning $29,120.00 annually.
  • The veteran overcame homelessness through efforts of CVI and OVES. With the assistance, of the DVOP they learned how to write a resume, which lead to a job ready status. They were hired as a Data Clerk making $35,360.00 per year in the corporate offices for a major retailer.
  • Through the collaboration of CVI and OVES staff, who assisted with the job search and application processs, a veteran overcame homelessness and is now earning $32,100.00 per year.
  • A DVOP assisted a low-income, unemployed, disabled veteran to become job ready who is now working part-time earning $11.50 per hour.
  • A veteran at risk of homelessness was assisted with updating his resume and received job leads from both CVI and OVES. The veteran was hired as a Machine Operator earning $13.00 per hour.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran who learned to develop a resume and improve their interviewing skills, while working with a Disabled Outreach Program Specialist, found employment as the Director of Culinary Operations earning $35,000.00 annually.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran was assisted in finding employment and has accepted a position as an Assistant Manager earning $14.50 per hour.
  • A DVOP specialist collaborated with WDVA's VORP and SSVF providers to help a low-income homeless, service-connected, disabled Chapter 31 veteran get housing and wrap around services and support. They are now employed as an Office Operations Associate at Camp Douglas earning $14.84 per hour.
  • A formally incarcerated veteran who received services from the DVOP and job center staff at the Oakhill Job Center is now enrolled in a CDL training program that will begin March 1st. The Veteran has also accepted a Warehouse position making $17.00 per hour and plans to work there until the training program begins.
  • An at risk of homelessness veteran overcame their housing barrier through the collaborative efforts of both OVES and CVI. Through the skills learned at the job club and with the case management provided by the DVOP, the veteran found employment in the hospitality industry, earning $20 per hour.
  • A homeless veteran is now housed with the assistance of CVI and OVES. They received resume assistance and is now working as an HVAC Technician within the entertainment industry making $23 per hour.
  • A veteran that was at risk of homelessness received supportive services from CVI and OVES. Through collaboration and skills learned at the job club, the veteran maintained their housing and updated their resume. The veteran was hired as a chauffeur making $15 per hour.
  • A veteran who recently relocated and overcame homelessness was assisted by OVES with job searches. As a result, the veteran is now employed doing Facility Maintenance work earning $21 per hour.
  • An SBE Veteran overcame homelessness through the efforts of CVI and OVES staff. The veteran was assisted with improving their resume, conducting job searches and attending mock interviews. The veteran accepted a position as a Cook in the hospitality industry earning $12 per hour.
  • After learning to update their resume an at risk of homelessness veteran received supportive services and was able to maintain their housing. They attended a job fair and were hired on the spot as a Material Handler making $12 per hour with a manufacturing company.
  • A low-income veteran secured employment as a Security Guard earning $15.00 per hour with the assistance of the Office of Veteran Employment Services staff.
  • A veteran worked with OVES staff and received resume development from the DVOP and job development from the LVER. WIOA Career Services support provided over $2500.00 in tools for their Apprentice Program. The veteran accepted an offer as a Union Apprentice earning $51,000.00 per year.
  • A veteran overcame homelessness, attended job club and learned to create a successful resume. The veteran has been hired as an Electrician earning $62,400.00 per year.
  • A veteran that was at risk of homelessness after relocating to Wisconsin was assisted with redeveloping their resume and applying for jobs. The veteran has accepted a position as a Security Guard making $35,360 per year.
  • An at risk of homelessness veteran who attended job club, learned how to update their resume and conducted a job search has been hired. They are currently working as a Machine Operator earning $34,000 per year.
  • An SBE Veteran overcame homelessness through the efforts of CVI and OVES staff. The veteran was assisted with writing a resume and was hired as an Assembler making $32,000 per year.
  • A veteran that was at risk of homelessness was assisted with resume development and job search has been hired as a Cook earning $23,000 per year.
  • A homeless veteran received resume development and job search assistance from the Office of Veteran Employment Services to secure employment as an CNC Machine Operator earning $37,400.00 annually.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran who worked with a DVOP received resume development and job referrals. This veteran accepted an offer as a Materials Removal Specialist/Crew Chief earning $31,200.00 per year.
