Veteran Employment Success Stories

Every month the Office of Veteran Employment Services (OVES) will be sharing stories of individuals that have successfully found careers through our services. Disabled Veterans Outreach Program Representative (DVOP) provide the intensive services necessary to meet the employment needs of Veterans who are economically or educationally disadvantaged, disabled, homeless, or facing other significant barriers to employment. July 2019

  • A service-connected disabled veteran who completed the VA Vocational Rehabilitation/Chapter 31 program received assistance from a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist who provided a mock interview, job and resume development, and job referrals. The veteran gained employment as a Mechanical Engineer earning $69,000.00 annually.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran who completed the VA Vocational Rehabilitation program was assisted by a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist who provided a full scope of career planning service and skills. Using the skills learned, the veteran secured employment as a Device Support Specialist earning $52,000.00 annually.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran who currently holds a temporary government position that ends in August 2019 worked with the Office of Veteran Employment Services staff and a County Veteran Services Officer to develop a career plan and search for permanent federal employment positions. The veteran developed a federal resume, completed several interviews, and was offered a federal employment position as a Call Center and Billing Specialist earning $39,000.00 annually.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran was provided resources for federal and state employment as well as help with applying for federal jobs and writing a federal resume. With the help of the Office of Veteran Employment Services staff, the veteran gained employment as a Dock Worker earning $16 per hour.
  • A veteran who recently separated from military service and has been unemployed for more than 27 weeks needed temporary employment before entering college full-time in the fall. The Office of Veteran Employment Services team coordinated an interview with an employer which subsequently led to the veteran accepting an offer as a Junk Removal and Moving Specialist earning $14.50 per hour.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran who recently completed the VA Vocational Rehabilitation/Chapter 31 program, earning a degree and certification as Physician Assistant graduate received help with creating a resume and job searching tips from the Office of Veteran Employment Services staff. The veteran used these skills to obtain a position as a Physician Assistant. Their starting salary is estimated at $80,000.00 annually with full benefit.
  • A Low-Income veteran worked with staff from the Office of Veteran Employment Services to receive resume development and job referrals. The veteran accepted an offer as an Account Manger earning $48,000.00 per year plus commissions.
  • A low-income veteran received assistance from a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist staff that provided career guidance, case management, job referrals, and resume creation assistance. After going through the career planning process, the veteran found employment as a HR/Accountant earning $18.00 per hour.
  • A veteran at risk of homelessness received various services from the Office of Veteran Employment Services staff and partnering agencies that allowed the veteran to obtain a phone, bus passes, and $300.00 worth of tools needed to begin employment as a Cabinet Builder. The veteran is earning $16.00 per hour.
  • A Disabled Veteran Outreach Programs Specialist provided ongoing employment services, encouragement, and job leads to a case managed service-connected disabled veteran who gained employment as a part-time Job Coach earning $10.00 per hour. The veteran stated that this position works well for their schedule, while they attend higher education full time working toward a teaching degree.
  • A disabled, wheel-chair confined veteran who has not held employment for several years, worked with a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist and partner agencies to receive employment as a Material Handler and General Assistant through the Senior Community Service Employment Program. This job will provide round-trip transportation and will enable the veteran to develop a work history. The veteran's rate of pay is the scheduled standard $7.25 per hour for the program.
  • A veteran who out-lived their union retirement and is at risk of being homeless received assistance with developing a resume and applying for positions that would supplement their social security insurance. The Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist developed a position under the Senior Community Service Employment Program as a Customer Service Representative making the scheduled standard program wage of $7.25 per hour for 20 hours per week. This income will supplement their current social security insurance and allow for the veteran to meet their monthly budget.
  • A service-connected disability veteran recently received career guidance from a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist who assisted the veteran with resume development, job leads, and interview preparation. The veteran was hired as a Cath Lab Radiology Technician with an annual salary of $77,000 with full benefits.
  • A homeless veteran received program training and assistance from the Center for Veteran Issues and the Office of Veteran Employment Services. The veteran made suggested changes to their resume and was hired as an Industrial Electrician earning $72,000.00 annually.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran received guidance from the Office of Veteran Employment Services staff on how to navigate through the state non-compete program. The veteran was selected as a Policy Analyst and accepted a position earning $65,000.00 annually.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran received career planning assistance from a Disabled Outreach Program Specialist who helped the veteran apply for several federal law enforcement positions. The veteran received and accepted a Law Enforcement Specialist position earning $60,000 annually.
  • A homeless veteran who served as a military policeman on active duty worked with the Center for Veteran Issues and the Office of Veteran Employment Services. After obtaining numerous career planning skills and resources to mitigate homelessness, the veteran secured employment as a VA Hospital Policeman earning $55,000.00 annually in another state.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran secured employment as a Business Developer earning $50,000.00 per year plus benefits, while receiving job search skills from a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist.
  • A homeless veteran received program training and assistance from the Center for Veteran Issues and the Office of Veteran Employment Services staff where the veteran learned to write a resume and honed their interviewing skills through Job Club. The veteran secured employment as a Maintenance Electrician earning $49,000.00 annually.
  • A recently released from incarceration veteran met with the Office of Veteran Employment Services to receive career planning services. After receiving non-WIOA program assistance and resume and interviewing skills training, the veteran was able to secure employment as a full time General Laborer earning $16.00 per hour.
  • A veteran who recently overcame homelessness attended the Center for Veteran Issues Job Club program to enhance their interviewing skills while working with a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist. The veteran used those skills to find employment as a Field Representative at a wage of $15.16 hourly.
  • The Office of Veteran Employment Services staff provided a low-income veteran career guidance, resume development, and employment search tips. The veteran found employment as a Cashier earning $12.70 per hour.
  • A veteran, who was recently released from incarceration, received assistance with their resume, job searching techniques, and referrals to companies from the Office of Veteran Employment Services. The veteran accepted a Production Lead position earning $20.00 per hour.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran received assistance with job leads, job referrals, and career exploration from a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist. The veteran secured a federal position as an Assistant Mail Carrier at a rate of $18.00 per hour.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran was helped by a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist who provided resume development assistance that targeted security officer positions. The veteran gained full time employment as a 2nd shift Security Officer earning $19.00 per hour.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran who was homeless worked with a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist to secure gas and food cards and was referred to the Center of Veterans Issues where housing and career planning was provided. The veteran secured employment as a Machine Shop Fabricator earning $18.00 per hour with full benefits.
  • A low-income, incarcerated veteran developed an employment plan with the Office of Veteran Employment Services staff that enhanced their employment search skills. The veteran used those skills to secure a position as an Assistant Machine Operator earning $12.00 per hour.
