DWD Awards Teacher Training and Development Grants to Eight Wisconsin School Districts

Teacher training and development enhances student education

MADISON – The Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development (DWD) has awarded Wisconsin Fast Forward (WFF) Teacher Training and Development Grants to eight Wisconsin School Districts in the amount of $373,338 to license teachers in various academic areas, including special education, career and technical education, general education, and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math).

"The Wisconsin Fast Forward program is investing in teachers so that our school districts are able to offer innovative classes and update existing educational courses," said DWD Secretary Ray Allen. "By empowering our teachers with new skills and teaching methods, we enhance student learning, all of which will support an accelerated future workforce in Wisconsin."

Organizations that received Teacher Training and Development grants are the following:

Milwaukee Public Schools – DWD issued a grant of $50,000 to Milwaukee Public Schools to license a minimum of eight new teachers in partnership with UW-Milwaukee and Milwaukee Area Technical College. Teacher candidates will gain licensure in Special Education through an expansion of the MPS Professional Licensure with Undergraduate Support (PLUS) Program.

Isthmus Montessori Academy – DWD issued a grant of $49,999 to Isthmus Montessori Academy in Madison to license a minimum of six teachers as an expansion of their IMA Fellows Project. Teacher candidates will receive Wisconsin Montessori Licenses for general education courses.

Berlin Area School District – DWD issued a grant of $45,000 to Berlin Area School District to license a minimum of six teachers through the district's '3'R's – Recruitment, Retention, and Resilience' Project. Teacher candidates will gain licensure as Special Education and Reading Specialist teachers from UW-La Crosse and UW-Oshkosh, respectively. Candidates who are already teaching in the district may also participate by gaining certification to teach dual enrollment courses, per the Higher Learning Commission standards.

Campbellsport School District – DWD issued a grant of $50,000 to Campbellsport School District to license a minimum of eight new teacher candidates. Teachers will be recruited to fill existing vacancies in the areas of Family and Consumer Science, Library Media, and Career and Technical Education at Moraine Park Technical College and other schools in the UW system, as necessary.

Baraboo School District – DWD issued a grant of $50,000 to Baraboo School District to license a minimum of eight new teacher candidates. As a component of the district's 'Thunderbird Teacher Training' Program, new teacher candidates will work toward their 'Special Education/Initial Educator 1801 - Cross Categorical' teaching licenses.

School District of Janesville – DWD issued a grant of $50,000 to the School District of Janesville to license a minimum of five teachers in the subject areas of Special Education, EL (English Learners), and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) as a part of its 'Grow Your Own' teacher recruitment initiative.

Hayward Community School District – DWD issued a grant of $28,500 to Hayward Community School District to license a minimum of eight new teacher candidates in the subject areas of English, Elementary Education, and Special Education as a part of its Hayward Hurricanes 'Teach Like a Cane' Program.

Seton Catholic Schools – DWD issued a grant of $49,839 to Seton Catholic Schools in Milwaukee to license a minimum of 18 new teachers in the subject areas of General Education, Spanish and ESL (English as a Second Language) as a part of its 'Seton Teacher Residency' Program. Teacher candidates will attend courses at Cardinal Stritch University while completing their assessments and residency.
