DWD Assistant Deputy Secretary Dernbach Lauds Strong Youth Apprenticeship Partnership with Northeast Wisconsin Industriess

STURGEON BAY – Today, Department of Workforce Development (DWD) Assistant Deputy Secretary BJ Dernbach visited N.E.W. Industries in Sturgeon Bay to highlight the state's Youth Apprenticeship (YA) program. N.E.W. Industries is working with two students this year and seeks to expand the program in their company.

"Businesses like N.E.W. Industries know Youth Apprenticeship is a program for our future; not only for business but for students and Wisconsin's workforce as well," Assistant Deputy Secretary Dernbach said. "With unemployment at a historic low of 2.8% and workforce participation at an all-time high, preparing young Wisconsinites before they enter the job market is crucial."

During the 2017-2018 school year, the program had 4,335 student enrollees from 363 schools working at 3,031 Wisconsin employers. The annual earnings of the student enrollees are estimated to be over $19 million. N.E.W. Industries is participating in a manufacturing youth apprenticeship and STEM apprenticeship, both programs have seen a state-wide increase in both business and student participation.
