Worker's Compensation and Volunteers

Volunteers are not covered by the Wisconsin Worker's Compensation Act. They cannot collect worker's compensation benefits for an injury or illness they sustain while performing volunteer service.

Exception: A non-profit organization can elect to cover a volunteer under its policy.

What is the definition of a volunteer?

  • A person who provides services for an organization or entity without receiving or expecting payment or compensation for their services.
  • A person who provides services for a non-profit organization who receives compensation totaling not more than $10.00 per week.
