Skills to Pay the Bills

Skills to Pay the Bills is a group-based learning program that covers the soft skills required for workplace success. The program is designed for youth (ages 14-24) or adults, with separate cohorts for each population. Groups are typically composed of 6-12 youth or a group of adults. Smaller groups or individual sessions may be authorized to ensure timely and appropriate services.

Skills are taught using a variety of engaging, modular activities that target communication, teamwork, problem-solving, professionalism, networking, and enthusiasm/attitude. This program, created and developed by the U.S. Department of Labor's Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP), is delivered as a one-session-per-topic format for youth or a one-session-per-two-topics format for adults. Sessions may be offered on an as-needed basis; not all sessions are required.

Agencies providing this service must agree to follow the required curriculum found at Soft Skills to Pay the Bills and use staff experienced in presenting to youth and adult learners and knowledgeable about learning styles. Formal training or certification is not required.

Service Delivery Expectations

  • A DVR Authorization for Services is required before any services can begin.
  • Agencies must deliver sessions according to the approved curriculum and ensure appropriate separation of youth and adult cohorts.

Skills to Pay the Bills Service Overview

Skills to Pay the Bills is a group-based learning program that supports development of workplace soft skills. Skills are taught using a variety of activities that are engaging and targeted to the youth or adult learner.

Service Components

  • Conduct sessions in groups of 6 to 12 participants (youth or adults) or in smaller groups or individual sessions as authorized.
  • Session length: approximately 1.5 to 4 hours.
    • Youth: one soft skill per session.
    • Adults: two soft skills per session.
  • The basic structure of the program is comprised of modular, hands-on activities focused on six skill areas:
    • Communication
    • Enthusiasm & Attitude
    • Teamwork
    • Networking
    • Problem Solving & Critical Thinking
    • Professionalism
  • Sessions may be delivered in person or virtually, provided participants have access to required technology and materials.
  • Additional activities may be included after discussion with DVR; no additional fees are available for these activities.
  • All six (6) sessions are not required. DVR may authorize sessions on an individual or as needed basis.

Documentation/Reporting Expectations

  • Required documentation for this service must be completed using the Skills to Pay the Bills Report (DVR-18031-E) or an approved equivalent.
  • Requests to use an alternate reporting template must be submitted to DVR for approval and must include all required elements in the same sequence as the DVR template.
  • Reports are due within five (5) business days of completion of authorized sessions.
RATE SERVICE
$125 / session

Skills to Pay the Bills:

Payable upon delivery of an acceptable service and submission of required report(s) to DVR within five (5) business days of the conclusion of the last contact with the consumer. Completion of service and required report not to exceed 45 days from receipt of purchase order.
