There is no provision in our law or administrative rules regulating billing practices by health care providers, including the use of any type of billing forms, electronic billing or medical coding. Under these circumstances, there is no statutory authority that permits the Worker's Compensation Division (WCD) to mandate payers (worker's compensation insurance carriers and self-insured employers) to accept or reject any type of medical coding on bills, including ICD-10.
We suggest that health care providers and payers adopt ICD-10 for purposes of continuity, if this medical coding is implemented as currently planned. Health care providers are encouraged to contact payers for any questions related to acceptable billing practices and medical coding.
