Veteran Employment Success Stories

Every month the Office of Veteran Employment Services (OVES) will be sharing stories of individuals that have successfully found careers through our services. Disabled Veterans Outreach Program Representative (DVOP) provide the intensive services necessary to meet the employment needs of Veterans who are economically or educationally disadvantaged, disabled, homeless, or facing other significant barriers to employment. August 2019

  • A service-connect disabled veteran received employment support from the Office of Veteran Employment Services staff, while the veteran awaited a determination by an employer regarding his ability to carry out the duties of a Tech B Signalman due to their disability. The employer approved the veteran's request for employment and was offered a position with a starting wage of $27.70 per hour.
  • The Office of Veteran Employment Services and the Center for Veteran Issues worked collaboratively to assist a homeless veteran to find employment as an Inmate Transporter at a wage of $50,960.00 annually.
  • A low-income and at risk of homelessness veteran, received career guidance, encouragement and coaching from the Office of Veteran Employment Services staff who assisted the veteran with all aspects of their employment search and securing a position as a full-time Lead Benefits & Claims Advisor earning $50,000.00 per year with full-benefits.
  • A low-income veteran received career planning assistance from the Office of Veteran Employment Services staff. The veteran used resume tips and interview techniques to gain a position as a full time Yard Jockey earning $47,800.00 annually.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran worked with the staff from the Office of Veteran Employment Services and received resume development and job referrals. The veteran accepted an offer as a Cardiac Telemetry Technician making $42,640.00 per year.
  • A low-income veteran found employment as an Organizer Specialist earning $40,000.00 annually with full benefits after receiving intensive career services through the Office of Veteran Employment Services.
  • A service-connected special disabled veteran seeking federal employment worked together with a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist to create a federal resume, a USAJOBS profile and completed applications for Medical Support Assistant positions. The veteran received an interview and accepted an offer as an Advanced Medical Service Assistant - (GS-6) earning $39,682.00 per year with full benefits.
  • A veteran participating in the Homeless Veteran Rehabilitation Program was hired as a Cleaning Specialist with a wage of $37,000.00 annually after receiving guidance and support from the Office of Veteran Employment Services staff.
  • A previously incarcerated and service-connected disabled veteran developed a resume and submitted employment applications with assistance from the Office of Veteran Employment Services staff. The veteran accepted a position as a full-time Q&A Inspector with a wage starting at $34,000.00 annually and weekend differentials if desired.
  • A homeless veteran worked with a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program specialist to create a resume and learn ways to search and apply for positions. The veteran submitted numerous applications, received an interview and was hired as a Machine Operator earning $32,000.00 annually.
  • A Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist aided a veteran that was at risk of homelessness. The veteran received a host of career planning direction and was able to find a position as a General Laborer earning $30,000.00 per year.
  • A homeless veteran received intensive services from the Office of Veteran Employment Services staff where the veteran learned to write an effective resume and enhanced their interviewing skills at the Center for Veteran Issues. The veteran accepted a position as Carpet Specialist at a wage of $30,000.00 annually.
  • A Low-income veteran worked with staff from the Office of Veteran Employment Services and received resume development and job referrals. The veteran accepted an offer as an Auto Parts Driver earning $24,544.00 per year.
  • A Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist assisted a service-connected special disabled veteran with job development, job referral and resume development, which resulted in an interview and employment. The veteran is now employed as a Transcriptionist earning $11.00 per hour.
  • A low-income veteran worked with a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist who provided the veteran with career guidance, job referrals, resume tips and employment search, which lead to the veteran finding employment as a Housekeeper earning $10.00 per hour.
  • A homeless veteran participating in the Homeless Veteran Rehabilitation Program was assisted with job referrals, resume assistance and job development, which helped the veteran obtain employment as a Machine Operator earning $9.00 per hour.
  • A veteran at risk of homelessness enrolled in the Homeless Veteran Rehabilitation Program, participated in job club and worked with a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist. The veteran received assistance updating their resume and applied for Counseling and Diversity positions. The veteran was hired as a full time Counselor under contract at $63,000.00 annually.
  • A 100% service-connected disabled veteran was assisted by a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist with job leads and resume development that resulted in employment as a Material Handler in the federal government system. The veteran accepted a wage grade GS 5 - Step 5 position earning $44,000.00 per year.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran participating in the VA Vocational Rehabilitation/Chapter 31 program received a full complement of career planning services from the Office of Veteran Employment Service staff that lead to employment as an Administrative Assistant earning $41,000.00 per year.
  • A low-income veteran received career planning assistance from a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist by developing a resume, obtaining interviewing suggestions and job searching assistance. The veteran obtained employment as a Metal Grinder/Finisher earning $34,200.00 annually using the skills learned from the Office of Veteran Employment Services staff.
  • A homeless veteran learned to use a computer to write a resume using ONET online and enhanced their interviewing skills, while in the Homeless Veteran Rehabilitation Program and receiving employment guidance from the Office of Veteran Employment Services staff. The veteran was hired as a Packer at a pay rate of $25,000.00 annually.
  • A Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist assisted a serviced-connected disabled veteran with resume development, job development and referrals through the Local Veteran Employment Representative. The veteran obtained employment as a Resource Specialist earning $29,000.00 per year.
  • A low-income and at risk of homelessness veteran obtained employment as a Distribution Manager earning $85,000.00 per year after receiving career planning services from a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist. The veteran was helped with developing a resume, updating their LinkedIn page, job searching, and other services related to employment.
  • A low-income veteran worked with the staff from the Office of Veteran Employment Services to receive resume development and job referrals. The veteran accepted an offer as an Alternative Education Teacher earning $45,000.00 per year.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran worked with a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist who received resume development, interviewing suggestions and job referrals. The veteran accepted an offer as a Tech Support Specialist earning $37,000.00 per year using the tools provided from the DVOP staff.
  • A veteran participating in the VA Vocational Rehabilitation/Chapter 31 Program received help connecting with numerous resources in the community, job leads, and job development through the VA and the Office of Veteran Employment Services resulting in a direct hire as a Housekeeper earning $31,200.00 per year.
  • Vietnam Era veteran receive an array of career planning services and community/housing support to develop a "job ready" status. The veteran gained employment as a Meter Painter earning $31,000.00 per year.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran was provided resume updates and job searching assistance from the local Office of Veteran Employment Services staff. The veteran was hired as a CNC Machinist earning $17.50 per hour that includes benefits, shift premiums and weekend differentials.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran worked with a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist who provided the following services: comprehensive assessment, career guidance, resume review/creation, employment search and application completion guidance. The veteran secured employment as a Field Support Specialist earning $16.00 per hour.
  • A homeless veteran received assistance from Office of Veteran Employment Services and Center for Veteran Issues staff to secure housing and employment as an Electrician earning $49,000.00 annually.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran was offered a permanent position as an Executive Assistant after previously gaining temporary employment with this company with the help of the Office of Veteran Employment Services staff. The veteran's salary is $43,000.00 annually.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran was provided job search guidance, resume development, and other career planning resources from the Office of Veteran Employment Services staff. The veteran gained employment as a Dispatcher starting at $40,000.00 annually.
  • A homeless veteran received assistance from Office of Veteran Employment Services and Center for Veterans Issues staff to secure housing and employment as an Assembler with an annual salary of $36,000.00.
  • A low-income and at risk of becoming homeless veteran worked with a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist to pursue a career as a Pipefitter. The veteran completed a Veteran-In-Piping program application, enrolled in the Pipefitters Union and was offered employment, while going through the VIP application process. The veteran was hired as a full-time Pipe Fitter Pre-Apprentice earning $35,000.00 annually with full-benefits and 401k options.
  • A homeless veteran received assistance from Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist and Center for Veteran Issues staff to secure housing and employment as a Machine Operator earning $14.50 per hour.
  • A homeless veteran with a service-connected disability gained employment as a General Laborer earning $13.50 per hour after receiving a full complement of career planning services from the Office of Veteran Employment Services staff.
  • A previously incarcerated veteran worked with a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist who provided the veteran with career guidance, resume review and employment search assistance. The veteran was able to secure employment as a Wood Technician, earning $12.00 per hour using the tools learned from the DVOP staff.
  • A Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist case managed a low-income veteran, while working in concert with a WIOA representative. The veteran was provided job search guidance and assistance, funding for education, resume development, interview preparation and encouragement. The veteran was hired as a part-time Security Guard with a starting wage of $10.50 per hour.
  • A low-income veteran received resume writing, interviewing skills/mock interviews tips, job search help and job referrals from a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist who guided the veteran to find employment as a Ramp/Customer Service Agent earning $10.90 per hour.
  • A veteran at risk of being homeless who attended a Yellow Ribbon reintegration event was provided guidance on interviewing and updating their resume. The veteran was skill marketed by the Local Veteran Employment Representative. The veteran interviewed and received an offer for $115,000.00 salary and a $9,200.00 performance bonus.
  • A service-connected disabled veteran received assistance with federal resume development, and job leads / referrals from a Disable Veteran Outreach Program Specialist. The veteran secured a position as a Legal Instrument Examiner GS-9 Step/10 position ($69,800.00 annually).
  • A service-connected disabled veteran received assistance from a Disable Veteran Outreach Program Specialist with resume development, job referrals, interview preparation, and job leads. The veteran secured a position as a Maintenance Supervisor at a rate of $63,000.00 annually.
  • A Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist provided a service-connected disabled veteran career management tools to find employment. Using the skills developed, while working with the Office of Veteran Employment Services staff, the veteran was offered a position as a Lawn Applicator Technician with a starting wage of $43,680 annually.
  • A veteran who overcame homelessness through a collaborative effort from the Office of Veteran Employment Services and the Center for Veteran Issues staff was hired as a Waste Driver earning $41,000.00 annually.
  • A veteran at risk of becoming homeless was hired as a Local Driver at a payrate of $32,000.00 annually. The Office of Veteran Employment Services staff assisted the veteran with obtaining a housing grant to circumvent the eviction from their apartment, conducting mock interviews and adjusting their resume once employment was obtained.
  • A veteran who overcame homelessness through a collaborative effort from the Office of Veteran Employment Services and the Center for Veteran Issues staff was hired as a delivery Driver earning $31,000.00 annually. The veteran received a full complement of career planning services, which led to their employment and housing assistance.
  • A previously incarcerated veteran received assistance with resume development, job leads and career counseling. The veteran secured a position as a CDL-B Driver at a rate of $18.00 per hour.
  • A transitioning service member received career planning assistance from a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist who provided the veteran with career assessment and guidance, resume review/development and job searching skills. The veteran secured employment as a Quality Control/ Assembler earning $17.50 per hour.
  • A low-income veteran with a service-connected disability worked with the Office of Veteran Employment Services staff to develop a resume and apply for various positions. The veteran accepted a position as a Census Field Representative earning $15.00 per hour plus mileage reimbursement.
  • A homeless veteran received career assistance from a Disabled Veteran Outreach Program Specialist who provided resume assistance and coordinated funding for training and housing assistance. The veteran was hired as General Laborer at a pay rate of $11.00.00 per hour.
