Idyllic Fazenda Boa Terra Hosts New Organic Farming Apprenticeship
SPRING GREEN – The Department of Workforce Development (DWD) – Bureau of Apprenticeship Standards (BAS), FareShare CSA Coalition, University of Wisconsin-Madison and University of Wisconsin Extension, launched the new Organic Vegetable Farm Manager Apprenticeship Wednesday.
This new registered apprenticeship is the work of DWD, FareShare, UW-Madison, UW Extension and a dozen established Wisconsin farmers. DWD Assistant Deputy Secretary BJ Dernbach was in attendance to congratulate this new apprentice and celebrate this new program.
"Under Governor Walker's leadership, Wisconsin continues to expand registered apprenticeship to further support workers with the skills needed to support Wisconsin's economy," Dernbach said. "Thanks to our partnership with expert educators, growers and farmers, we're proud to bring this registered apprenticeship model to fruition to help our farmers further develop their workforce and fill the ongoing need for skilled farm managers."
DWD provides dozens of apprenticeship opportunities in the construction, industrial, service and utility trades.
Wisconsin has one of the nation's oldest registered apprenticeship programs, created in 1911, and has served as a national model for generations, annually provides value-added training for as many as 11,000 apprentices and 2,500 employers across the state in over 200 occupations.
