DWD Secretary Allen Meets with La Crosse Business Leaders, Highlights Local Talent Development Successes

Chamber presentation draws over 50 attendees, precedes Apprenticeship-themed visit to City Brewing Co.

LA CROSSE – During a visit today to La Crosse, Department of Workforce Development (DWD) Secretary Ray Allen encouraged employers seeking skilled talent in the La Crosse region to fill their labor market needs by contacting DWD and local workforce partners, who offer an array of proven workforce solutions.

"Across the state, communities like La Crosse are growing and adding jobs, and employers are struggling to find enough workers to fill openings they have available today," Secretary Allen said. "Under Governor Walker's leadership, we are advancing innovative and proven solutions to expand the talent pool and connect employers with the workforce they need to thrive."

Secretary Allen provided an overview of DWD's talent development programs during a roundtable presentation and listening session at the La Crosse Chamber of Commerce. More than 50 business leaders, workforce partners and other stakeholders attended the event.

Following the roundtable, Secretary Allen toured City Brewing Company to highlight Registered Apprenticeship, a key talent development strategy that has developed skilled workers in Wisconsin for more than a century. City Brewing currently employs seven active apprentices and three recent graduates in their /Maintenance/Millright, Electrical and Steamfitting programs. The La Crosse location is the employer's corporate headquarters and employees 489 people.

"Registered Apprenticeship has helped generations of Wisconsin's workforce develop in-demand skills that employers need and earn a paycheck at the same time," Secretary Allen said. "The program's success would not be possible without the participation of employers like City Brewing Company, which like Registered Apprenticeship is a true Wisconsin success story known around the country."

Secretary Allen also made an afternoon stop to the Workforce Development Center–Western Wisconsin, located at 2615 East Avenue South. The Workforce Development Center provides employment and training-related services for workers, youth and businesses and includes DWD staff and workforce partners serving veterans, job seekers with disabilities and other workers.
