Milwaukee Area Technical College invests Wisconsin Fast Forward-Blueprint for Prosperity worker training grant funds to support community safety through successful reentry
MILWAUKEE – Today, Lt. Governor Rebecca Kleefisch joined Department of Workforce Development (DWD) Secretary Ray Allen and Department of Corrections (DOC) Secretary Jon Litscher at Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC) to recognize partners and students in a worker training initiative designed to address the skills gap and support increased community safety.
DWD awarded MATC a grant under Governor Walker's Wisconsin Fast Forward (WFF) Blueprint for Prosperity worker training program to deliver a 14-week, 14-credit CNC technical education certificate program to individuals under DOC custody or supervision and will return to the Milwaukee area in the community. Up to 48 students will be trained in four groups over two years. Today's ceremony included 14 graduates from the minimum-security Felmers O. Chaney Correctional Center and Marshall Sherrer Correctional Center in Milwaukee.
“We know what sets someone up for success upon reentry: a job, and with it a sense of purpose for each day, a community of coworkers and friends, and a stable income that provides for stable housing,” said Lt. Governor Rebecca Kleefisch. “My heartiest congratulations to these graduates as they put the past behind and embrace the future ready for a good-paying job in a high-demand career field.”
Secretary Allen said: "Employers that tap talent pools they may not have considered in the past are now reaping the economic and workforce benefits of hiring highly skilled men and women who are self-motivated to break the cycle of criminal behavior and corrections, and succeed as gainfully employed individuals who do not reoffend. We encourage employers to consider all talent options available to help them fill their labor market needs."
DOC Secretary Litscher said: “Part of DOC’s mission is to reduce recidivism by providing opportunities for inmates to receive educational and vocational programming while incarcerated, including training in high-demand occupational fields. The CNC training program is part of DOC’s reentry efforts and one example of how DOC, DWD, and technical colleges can work collaboratively to prepare inmates for employment and reintegrate them into the community.”
