MADISON – On Friday, April 15, 2016, Department of Workforce Development (DWD) Secretary Ray Allen received the Distinguished Service Award from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW-Madison) School of Journalism and Mass Communication in recognition of his outstanding contributions and career achievements in the fields of journalism and community involvement.
"I am honored to be recognized by my colleagues and alma mater," Secretary Allen said. "I would like to thank those who provided positive guidance throughout my career, especially my former professors at the University of Wisconsin School of Journalism and Mass Communication."
Secretary Allen was born and raised in Milwaukee and moved to Madison in 1969 to attend the University of Wisconsin. Prior to being appointed as Secretary of DWD, Secretary Allen was most recently the Secretary of the Department of Financial Institutions, and prior to that held numerous other roles in state government. He is the former publisher and owner of The Madison Times, a weekly newspaper, and is a partner and Vice President of Madtown Paradies, which operates retail stores in Dane County's Regional Airport.
At DWD, Secretary Allen directs the state talent development agency which has an annual budget of over $450 million, over 1,600 employees and six divisions. He was appointed to the position by Governor Scott Walker on January 21, 2016.
