The Medical Assistant Accelerated Pathway to Employment Training project (MAAPET) prepares individuals to work as a Medical Assistant (MA) in a physician s office, medical clinic (ambulatory center), and some areas of a hospital or laboratory. MAs perform administrative and clinical tasks for doctors and other health care providers. They may do everything from filing records, to helping doctors and healthcare clinicians examine patients. Clinical duties may include taking and recording vital signs and medical histories, preparing patients for examination, drawing blood, and administering medications as directed by a physician. Employment demand for Medical Assistants is projected to grow 23% from 2018 - 2028. This is much faster than other occupations. The program included 10 weeks of classroom and lab instruction (40 hours per week) and 4 weeks of practicum/clinicals (40 hours per week) with one of four healthcare system partners. Show More

Minimum Test for Adult Basic Education (TABE) score equivalent to 6th grade level in reading and 6th grade level in math. In order to be paid a training wage while participating in the MAAPET program, candidates must be interviewed, selected and hired as trainees by one of four hospital partners.

Medical Assistants can enter the field directly, or can advance into the field from various entry level healthcare positions such as Certified Nursing Assistant(CNA), Medical Transporter, Medical Office Assistant, Environmental Service Worker (housekeeping), etc.. Medical Assistants can advance in their careers by moving into team leadership, supervisory positions or can advance into other careers in the medical field such as: Surgical Technologist, Medical and Clinical Laboratory Technologist, Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), or Registered Nurse (RN).
Center for Healthcare Careers of SE WI operates the MAAPET program in collaboration with four major regional healthcare systems: Advocate Aurora Health, Ascension Wisconsin, Children's Wisconsin, and Froedtert Health. MAAPET trainees are hired prior to the start of each training cohort and are paid a training wage during their participation in this 14 week program.
The Program Instructor offers weekly appointments for one-on-one or small group tutoring as necessary. Healthcare professionals from hospital partner systems also volunteer as needed.

Students will be required to purchase a set of scrubs, a stethoscope and a watch with a secondhand, and certification test study guide/practice (optional) and NHA certification test. All other equipment will be provided by the program including the use of a CHCSEW owned laptop & textbook. Total cost of fees is $400.00. Through June 30, 2020 program costs (Tuition, books, supplies and materials) are covered under a grant from the Advancing a Healthier Wisconsin Endowment (AHW)
