JANUARY LOCAL EMPLOYMENT FIGURES RELEASED

MADISON – Wisconsin local area employment data for January indicate changes over the month and year that edged upward, but remained in line with statewide statistics for the past decade, according to figures released today by the Department of Workforce Development (DWD).

"Employment figures for Wisconsin counties and metropolitan areas, not surprisingly, reflect the effects of an unusually harsh winter, slowing national economy, and the cutbacks in seasonal help that normally come with the end of the holiday shopping season," said DWD Secretary Jennifer Reinert.

"Although construction and manufacturing have decreased in some areas of the state, construction has actually increased statewide more than two percent over the year, with some metro areas experiencing double-digit growth, and manufacturing has only dipped a modest one half of one percent," she said.

Ten of Wisconsin’s 11 metropolitan areas had seasonally adjusted unemployment rate increases and one area (Janseville-Beloit) had a reduction in rate in the December to January period. Over-the-year comparisons indicate ten metropolitan areas had unemployment rate increases and one area (La Crosse) had a reduction in the rate.

Most of the over the month job losses were concentrated in the retail and services sectors, due largely to the holiday season winding down and extra help being let go. This was evident in most of the metro areas.

"We see many positive economic signs, not the least of which are recent employer surveys conducted by Manpower indicating that many Wisconsin employers plan to add workers, while few plan cutbacks in the next several months," Secretary Reinert said. "We have every reason to believe that the state’s economy will see a healthy rebound in the spring and summer months, as weather improves and recent interest rate cuts take effect," she said.
